Grayson throws his head back and laughs, leaving me confused and tense. His index finger drags lightly across my hand. I flinch, and he smirks and walks back to his spot on the wall. The spot he touched tingles, and I twist my wrist and rub the skin against my pants.

Mama always told me to think before I spoke. She would be slapping me across the head for this. Dad might have beaten me to death for ruining Silvie’s chances. Just thinking about them opens the ache inside me. The pressure to get Silvie a good life weighs heavily on my exhausted shoulders.

“You’ll be paired up and assigned an omega or alpha pack to shadow. You’ll carry out such tasks as fetching, carrying, delivering food, drinks, messages, requests. There is no such thing as no to our guests, they will have the ultimate experience. If you don’t think you should do something, you go to Simon or Elaine and let them handle it. You will be on call 24 hours a day.”

My eyes widen. What?

Hopefully, they pair me with Silvie. But that hope dies almost as quickly as I think it.

“Onyx Davies?” Simon calls out. He’s holding a black leather-bound folder in his hands. My stomach drops. I take it gingerly and flip it open. It’s the pack from the pool. Pack Drest.

“Mr Simon, sir, this isn’t going to work-” I try to explain, but Simon and Elaine hiss, and I shut my mouth. I can’t help but notice that Elaine looks like a younger, less powerful version of Yvette.

I know what happens when you get between a pack and what they want. Alphas, especially rich ones, can be really vindictive. Fine. I close the folder and keep my head high while they hand out more.

The door smashes open, startling almost everyone in the room for a second time. It bangs on the wall, the handle puncturing a hole. A man stands backlit by the lights beyond him, there’s something familiar about him, but I’m too struck by the rage pouring off him. Lemon wafts into the room, bitter and sharp. My eyes widen as I realise it’s him, it’s the omega. I risk glancing up and down the line of people. I want to go to him, protect him from everyone in here. Why, though? He’s not my responsibility, and yet, he feels like he is. Perhaps it’s because of us being semi-friends. I stay exactly where I am, my body tense and ready to spring across the distance.

Simon moves to meet him. “What do you think you’re doing?”

I tense, shifting my foot forward.

“Simon, back away.” Falcon barks out, much to my relief

Dylan lets out a hiss and stalks further into the room, finding a spot perfectly in between all three alphas and Simon.

A moment later, a harried Yvette jogs in behind the man. She goes straight to Falcon and whispers in his ear while shooting a glare at Dylan. That glare has me frowning at her. I want to step between them and stop her from looking at him.

I tune them all out. Dylan is struggling. With each passing moment, his agitation grows, and I can’t stand it. His chest rises and falls, and as he turns in my direction, his expression becomes clear, and he is livid.

He ignores the alphas and searches the line until he finds me. As he passes Silas, the alpha makes a move to touch him. He dodges it, knocks Falcon’s hand away, and gives Grayson a warning look.

Is this some kind of joke? Is someone setting us up for a prank?

My skin feels hot and cold, and I shiver as he walks straight over to me. He stops less than a foot away and stares down at me. My heart throbs painfully in my chest. I’m aware of all the curious stares and the fury of the alphas. The room feels dangerous.

“Dylan, what are you doing?” I whisper. I glance around and find all eyes on us. A cold sweat breaks out, and I shift my weight from leg to leg.

Falcon looks at me sharply. I can see all the questions he wants to ask on the tip of his tongue, but wisely, he holds them back.

Dylan takes the folder from my hands and flips it open, his lips curling, and his eyes growing dark. He reaches for my hand and holds tight as he turns around. He hurls the folder at Falcon. Pages of information rain into the air, and the big alpha just stands in the middle of the storm, impassive, staring at the omega holding me captive.

There’s a tension in the room that feels different from anything I've felt before.

He tugs me against him, and his scent gets strong, wrapping around me and turning sweet. I can’t help but feel I’m being used as a shield, but I can’t work out why or how.

“I’m working,” I say softly to break the silence.

“Release her!” Silas says furiously in a low voice, but he doesn’t bark.

“She’s mine.” Dylan growls. I don’t think anyone but the alphas, Simon, and I heard, but still, my face burns.

Mine? Mine! My brain is melting. I’m melting. Wow, no wonder omegas swoon when their alphas say it. It suddenly makes total sense to me. Yes. I will step into fire for you, incredibly hot male specimen of an omega. I will be yours.

No! Bad, Onyx. Control yourself.

The tension rises and rises until, finally, Falcon lowers his gaze to me and says clearly, “Simon, reassign Onyx to Dylan.”

“But, sir-”
