“Yvette, I want you to keep working with security and our public relations team. I’m going to be distracted for the next few weeks. If there are any issues, bring them to me, but otherwise, I’m entrusting this event to you.”

Yvette blinks a few times. “Does that mean?”

I nod sharply. “We’re going to attempt to win back our omega. So, we’ll be stepping back, Silas, too. It’s a tremendous opportunity for the both of you to show me what you're capable of. I'm looking at creating two new positions if this pans out so that we can step back a little. I want you both helping to run the Treyfield empire.”

Their eyes widen. Yvette looks almost like she might cry.

“Thank you, sir,” Yvette says in a breathy tone.

Simon swallows hard and nods sharply. “Oh, good luck, sir.”

“Thank you. Can you handle the resort, Simon?”

“Of course, sir, it will be my pleasure.”

Yvette grins. “Everything will be fine. Good luck.”

“Good. Have at it then.” I snort as she walks away with a bounce in her step.

The world falls away, and I find myself pausing inside the doorway to the Sunflower room. The yellow colour goes perfectly for tea and nibbles. Or so I’m told. Personally, I’ve been trying to destroy this room since I first saw it. It's garish and offensive and worse yet, Sila's mother, Vienne, adores it. All the more reason.

An omega with red hair spots me and blushes hotly. She looks like she’s going to approach, so I give her my best glare. I can see her courage wilt and fail her, and in moments, she turns and flees. Good, now I can focus. I'm about to leave when I catch the low voices from inside the room.

“But you know them, right?”

I vaguely recognise that voice.

“I have met them.” Onyx says evasively.

“Then you can introduce me.”

“No, Silvie. I can’t. I am an employee.”

“Fine,” Silvie laughs, “then you have to do what I say, and I say I want to meet them.”

“Not going to happen.” Onyx says firmly.

There’s a silence.

“Do you think that I’m not good enough?”

“No! Come on, Silvie, that’s not what I meant. I’m saying it’s not appropriate for me to introduce you.”

I want to applaud her sense of self-preservation.

“Fine. Don’t introduce me. Tell me about them.”

Onyx sighs. “There is nothing to tell. They are my bosses.”

“How can you be so selfish? You should be helping me.”

“I am helping you. I know you can’t see it. But I am.”

“Then give me what I need,” Silvie hisses. “I deserve this. All those years, I stayed hidden at home, and I lost my potential pack. I was alone and heartbroken, and you weren’t there.”

I bristle and hold back the growl. Why am I getting so defensive over the beta?

“I was working, Silvie. We’ve had this discussion many times. I didn’t abandon you. You had food, clothes, suppressants, your treats. I kept a roof over our heads.”
