“And here we are, and I have a chance to become the omega of the pack world, and you are denying me and refusing to help me.”

“It’s my job. If I get caught, I get fired. I don’t get paid, and you get shown the door. You’d sacrifice it all for that?” Onyx growls.

“For love, I would sacrifice anything.”

“You’re not in love.”

“I could be.”

“Silvie,” Onyx stretches her name out, sounding firm and cold. “I will not introduce you to the Treyfield pack.”

Suddenly, the realisation of exactly what Silver is asking dawns on me, and I feel that darker side of my personality rise up. There are many ways I can destroy the young omega. Her chance, her one freebie that Silas bestowed on her, will be ruthlessly ripped away, and I will dump her and her sister right back where I found them.

No one from Treyfield, Hastings, or Waters will hire them. No one will touch them. They will be blacklisted all over Silver Falls, and if I make that decision, the society will follow.

I step back when I hear a chair scrape, ducking into an alcove. Silvie storms out of the room a few minutes later. Onyx comes to the door and watches her. She wears the same expression of exhaustion that I so often find on my face.

“It was wise of you to turn her request down.”

She turns her head and finds me in the shadows.

“Of course, I turned it down. I’m your employee, not your friend.”

I study her. “Your work ethic is unusually strong.” I pause, letting the compliment sink in. “And yet, mornings like this morning happened. Would you care to explain how that came about?”

“Can I say no?”

“Not if you want to continue living here easily.” I say the words with a slight rise of my shoulders. I step out and gesture for her to walk beside me.

“You have no lights.”

“Pardon?”

“I couldn’t find the light switch. I needed some water, and when I went back, your lights were impossible to turn on.”

“I see. I’ll get right on that.” And make sure it never causes an issue again.

She narrows her eyes. “So, I went to lie in what I thought was my bed, and lo-and-behold, there’s a man there. We talked about the fact neither of us sleep well. I fell asleep, and so did he. It was a simple accident.”

“Falling asleep in someone’s bed is not an accident.”

Her eyes flash. “Have you not been so tired you’ve fallen asleep on the couch? Have you never, ever seen someone-” she cuts herself off and blows out a breath.

Realisation crashes through me, and I don’t know whether to be appalled at her suicidal tendencies or amazed that she appears to be completely genuine. Did she stay with Gray to look after him?

“I’m aware of how Gray feels about sleep.” I concede.

“I just…wanted to help.”

“Why? What are you getting out of it?” I can’t help the skeptical tone.

“Well, a conversation with a person who isn’t ordering me to get them something. Learning that there’s a really happy, smiling man who hides a whole lot of pain. A man who reminds me a lot of me.”

“I’ll be requiring you to sign NDA’s.”

“Of course. I’ll sign as soon as you bring them.”

I hesitate. I hadn’t expected her to agree quite so quickly. She looks at me, and I find myself staring at those blue-grey eyes and wondering when she got so pretty.
