Dylan stands stiffly beside me. The last time we were in here was the first time I knotted him. The memories press on me.

“We aren’t giving up on you. We didn’t do what you think we did, and we’re not going to just quit. You belong with us. You deserve to be happy, too, Dylan.”

His hands clench, and I take my chance, moving quickly and pressing my lips against his. He stands stiffly, his hands on my shoulders, not pushing, not pulling, and then his lips suddenly move, soften. I kiss him the way I've been dreaming. All-consuming and like I want to crawl inside him and make him mine.

He kisses me back.

It’s the first time since he left that I've really allowed myself to feel hope.

And then he breaks away, pressing his palm against my chest and closing his eyes while his chest heaves.

“Falcon,” he whispers.

My name, he says my name. Like he wants me to rescue him. I promise, baby, I will.

I press against his palm. “Not giving up. Not now. Never. You’re the only one we want.”

He sucks in a shuddering breath, and his eyes get cold. He doesn’t believe me. That’s fine. And because I can see he’s close to breaking, I turn and leave. It kills me, but I force myself to do it.

The beta’s incessant chatter becomes the anthem of my determination. With each step, I hear her voice in my head, and I formulate a new plan.

I’ve got hundreds of notes on the tablet. The email that they’ve provided has asked a few specific questions, which means someone is reading what I’m doing. I’m still not sure if this is a real job or not, but I’m hoping it is. So, I’m doing my best. I make a few more notes about the quieter omegas, the ones who aren’t as pretty nor as confident. There are some packs as well hanging back, who aren’t as committed to finding an omega, they appear to be here just because. I’ve interviewed them, and they’ve all been forthcoming with me, and I've forwarded that information to Silas.

“Come.”

I glance at Dylan and shake my head. “We can get some good information at dinner.”

“Nyx. Come.”

I roll my eyes and stand up, stretching out my aching muscles. “All right, where are we going?”

He leads me up to the penthouse and then opens my door. I don’t know where the alphas are. Their absence should make me feel less anxious, but it feels oppressive and dangerous without them around. I don’t like the way my brain’s thinking regarding those men. I seem to be forgetting that cats have claws.

“For you,” Dylan says.

I peer on the bed and stop when I see the beautiful gown. It’s a smokey grey with thin straps.

“I can’t wear that.”

Dylan rolls his eyes. “Put it on.”

I shake my head. “No.”

“Nyx.” He growls.

I whirl and find him too close. I freeze, staring up at him. His expression changes, and his pupils widen. He moves slowly, leaning towards me. His lips brush against mine. I suck in air. I haven’t blinked, and he hasn’t looked away. He pulls back and studies me for a moment before leaning in again. This time, his arms go around my back and pull me up against his chest.

The tantalizing scent of sweet lemon fills the room. That scent is his. I might not be able to smell it like an alpha, but it’s burned into my memory now. But with his lips pressed firmly against mine, I can taste it. It’s a drug.

I whimper into his mouth and move my lips under his. Kissing him back. Oh, no, I’m kissing him back. I have to stop. It feels incredible. His fingers spread wide around my back, sliding up to my shoulders. I feel so safe in his arms.

I tear myself away, and he lets me go.

He stares at me. I stare back.
