“We shouldn’t have done that.” I blurt.

He straightens, nods, turns, and walks out of the room.

I stare at the door. He just left. He didn’t ask. He just accepted it. I should be relieved, and yet…I shrug it off and look at the dress.

Fine. I’ll wear it.

Dylan spots me when I walk out in the silver gown. He gets the same look on his face that he had just before he kissed me. My stomach flutters, and I look down at the dress, smoothing it over my thighs. I’m unable to look at him a moment longer, if I do, he’s going to know that I think that black shirt is sinfully right on him and makes me want to spread my fingers across the expanse of his body and pop each little button open.

“Okay, ready.” I say with false bravado.

He turns with me and falls into step exactly beside me. My arm brushes the black shirt he’s wearing, and I have to bite hard on my lower lip to stop from making a sound.

We arrive in the dining room, and I almost trip. Silver is sitting at our table. She’s leaning against Gray, fluttering her lashes up at him.

Dylan tenses beside me.

“Do you want to go somewhere else? I’m not really hungry.” I peer up at him, trying to read his expression.

He hesitates and then shakes his head. “Scared?”

I scowl. For an omega that is prone to broody silences, he sure knows how to get his point across with just a word or two.

“I’m not scared. But it’s not going to be fun.”

We arrive at the table and take our seats. Silver hasn’t noticed that she’s lost the attention of the alphas. I watch her, waiting for the exact moment. It happens thirty seconds later. Her back stiffens, and her eyes spark.

She looks up and hits Dylan with a glare that makes me stiffen. My small movement draws her attention, and she focuses on me. The venom in her eyes is shocking.

“Silver.” I say with a hint of frost in my voice.

She blinks twice, and a happy, generous smile appears on her lips. But I can’t shake that icy chill that’s surrounded me.

“Hello, sister. You look almost nice. It’s a shame that isn’t your colour. You remind me of Prudence.”

My cheeks flame, and I look down at the gold cutlery. Prudence was a poor girl in our neighbourhood that Silver used to tease mercilessly about her weight and acne. She’s got a family and a husband who loves her, though, unlike us. I liked Prue. She was sweet and kind.

“She looks beautiful.” Gray says loudly.

Silver laughs. “You’re being kinder than you have to be. I’ll help you with your dress next time, Nanna, I promise.”

The nickname makes blood rush from my head. I clench my hands into fists in my lap and bite the inside of my cheek.

“Nanna?” Gray asks with an edge in his voice that Silver misses.

“Oh, it’s the nickname my father used to call her before he died.”

Falcon shifts his weight. I feel the heat of his thigh beside mine. It’s reassuring, and I get the impression that Falcon just did that deliberately. “Fascinating.”

“Is it?” Silver says with another tinkling laugh. “Enough about us. Tell me about you. I want to know everything. What makes Falcon Treyfield tick?”

“Coffee and the blood of people who piss me off.” Falcon says in a deep rumble. His hand slides over my thigh, down to my knee.

Liquid heat simmers inside me. I suddenly feel naked at the table.

A waiter puts a plate of food in front of me. I look up at him and smile. “Thanks, George.”

“Your welcome, Nyx.”
