I wrinkle my nose at him and then become aware of the way my hands are sitting on his shoulders. We’re so close, but it doesn’t feel weird. It feels natural.

“Do you know who you are?” I whisper.

“I’ve been stalking you.” Dylan confesses, ignoring my question.

I stare at him, and my heart skips a beat. It should be terrifying, but with those words came a clench in the vicinity of my heart that sends an empathic line of pleasure straight to my core. My breath seizes in my lungs, and my thoughts scatter.

“You…stalked me?” I ask for clarity.

“Since you fed me that first day in the alley. I was almost dead. We haven’t been meeting by accident. I’ve been following you.” He says in a rush. “God, that sounds creepy.”

He stares at me. There’s no sign of a smile. He’s not yelling out, he’s not joking. I can’t help but find it…endearing.

“You stalk me.” I say with a tiny smile I can’t hide. “Specifically me?”

“Yes, specifically, exclusively you.”

He relaxes against me, leaning in with a soft growl.

I push away from him as the wash of feelings rips reality cold and raw over me. I’m supposed to help him get back with his alphas. What the hell kind of false fairy tale have I fallen into?

I look over and notice the strangest thing. A statue of a fat little dog with its tongue lolling out sits in the shrubs, a cat perched with watchful eyes beside it. You can’t see it from any angle around the pool, only when you’re in it looking out.

“Look at this.”

Dylan comes closer and has a look. “That’s Grayson’s influence. He leaves a signature wherever he works.”

“A cat and a dog?”

“I know. It’s weird, but that’s Gray for you.” Dylan studies it intently.

“We better get back.” I say instead.

Dylan sighs and lets me go, and I swim away from him and towards the pool ladder. I climb out and shiver in the cold air. It feels like the pool was a dream, an alternate reality. Dylan glances around and then hoists himself out of the pool. I watch, mesmerised, as his shirt, now a second skin, allows me to see his arm and back muscles flex. Water sluices off him, and he unfolds, standing to his full height.

He truly is a beautiful man.

I turn away and pick up a towel, trying to wring as much water from my dress as I can. I pick up my shoes and stare towards the hotel, refusing to look at the omega beside me.

There’s a tension that I know is entirely of my own creation between us now. Every step of the walk back digs it deeper. Silas comes out of the staff rooms and stops, his eyes traveling up and down Dylan and then me.

“Evening.”

I incline my head stiffly. “Good evening, Alpha Hastings.”

Silas presses the button, and when the lift door opens, he gestures to allow us to enter first.

I’m so hyper aware of the fact my nipples are tight, the dress is clinging to me closer than a second skin. Also, I’m dripping water over their perfect lift. I chew on the inside of my cheek, wondering if I should say anything or just leave it be.

In the end, I choose silence as the best defense. The doors slide open, and I’m confronted by so much skin and muscles that I stumble back against the lift wall and press against it like it might be able to absorb me.

Grayson flexes and then looks up all innocent like. “Oh, hey. Didn’t expect you back so early.”

I know he’s talking to Dylan, but the way his eyes linger on my chest makes me burn. The doors aren’t shutting. I have no choice but to brave it. Now, do I run or walk with my head high?

I edge out, watching as the alphas turn to follow Dylan. The way to my room is clear. I take a chance and move quickly, only to hit a solid wall and stumble to a stop as I practically bounce off Silas’ chest.

He puts his hands on my shoulders to steady me. An electric current goes down my body from where he’s touching. I lose my ability to move, staring up at him. He doesn’t look down at me, just moves around me and let's go.
