I’m invisible in this room. I could be naked, and no one would see me.

The thought stings, even though I know it shouldn’t. Even though it’s completely wrong of me. I’m ashamed of myself as I walk down to my room.

A quick shower and a change into sleep shorts and a tank top later, and I find myself in the hallway, sneaking back towards the lifts. I just need some air.

The lounge is dark, but suddenly, a screen lights up and illuminates Silas’ face. He peers up at me. I hesitate only a moment and then walk past him. I’m allowed to get water.

I think.

“Dylan is annoyed with you and mad at us.”

“Me? What did I do?” I ask, outraged.

“You left him here with us. I believe.”

I ponder that for a moment and then scoff. Then I stop, and I actually wonder if he does feel like I abandoned him. Perhaps I shouldn’t have done that.

“He’s mad at us because that was an obvious ambush.”

I blink. “It was?”

“Of course. Grayson has a gym up here and access to the gym downstairs. He doesn’t need to be lifting weights right near the door.”

“Oh.”

I finish pouring myself a glass of water and sip it slowly at the island.

“My mother organised all that.” Silas says.

“All what?”

He laughs softly and shakes his head. “I tried to warn them when they wanted to form a pack with me. My mother is a controlling force of nature. She is incredibly manipulative. I underestimated her. We all did.”

I set my glass down and move closer, still with a huge lounge between us.

“She organised it. My mother,” the words are a curse, “kept pushing and pushing. She made comments that ripped him apart. She made sure to point out that he was less. The way your sister did with you all night. We tried to use our manners to combat her. Never said a sharp word or put a stop to it, we didn’t want to cause a scene. We let words lay in the air between us. Words that infected our pack. My mother is pure poison, Onyx.”

“Is he?” I ask. Silas frowns. “Is he less?” I clarify. “Is he what your mother says?” I'm almost afraid of his answer.

Silas laughs, but it fades away, and a deep softness takes over his face. “No, he’s everything.”

I can feel the honesty in his words. The relief and regret that runs through me is excruciating.

This sad alpha shuts off his laptop and stands up. He pauses in the frame of the hallway light.

“Goodnight, beta.”

And just like that, the peaceful moment is shattered. The spot where he was standing is still pulsing with the contained aggression. He used words to pierce me with this time.

I feel naked and like I need another shower.

With a mental snarl at myself for letting their harsh words get into my head, I pad back to my bedroom. I've just got my hand on the door handle when I hear a muffled sob from the room beside me.

I hesitate, staring at it, but in the end, I slip inside and creep towards the bed.

“Grayson?”

He whimpers again.
