“Not a chance,” Silver says and looks back at me. “You need to live a little.”

She dives into the pool and disappears beneath the water.

My heart is beating triple time. I can see all my hopes and dreams going up in ash, and she’s…she’s flipping around like a damn otter and giggling like a little kid. Every time I start to say anything, she dives under the water again.

I crouch by the side of the pool, slapping the water to get her attention, but she spits water in my direction and disappears under again.

“Silver, please,” I beg.

I catch movement and turn in that direction. I’m frozen in terror. My fears of losing my job pale compared to this shitshow. A group of guests, all male, are coming this way. I know they’re guests because we’ve been forced to memorise the dossier of all of them. All sixty-eight of them.

This group is a pack of alphas that don’t have an omega. Julien, Derek, Mitch, and Toby are young and rich. In my opinion, spoiled rotten, but I’m not asked for my opinion. I just have to serve. There have been whispers among the other betas that they are bad alphas.

And they’ve seen us, and they’re coming our way. I catch the lead one leering at me, right until a breeze lifts his hair. He freezes, and then his attention focuses on my sister. I inhale and catch the cotton candy scent over the chlorine.

Fucking damnit!

I glance from them back to the pool and crouch at the edge. “Please, Silver, please.” I whisper, waiting for her to surface. It takes several dives, and they’re almost on top of us when she pops up just near me and spots the pack. Her eyes go wide, and she sinks down to her nose in the water.

Why is her scent so strong? Cotton candy floods the air, muted by the pool water, but it’s there, and it shouldn’t be. Isn’t she taking the suppressants? I try to think of something, anything I can do, but there’s almost nothing except throw myself in front of my sister and make a loud enough noise that they back off.

And pray.

“Hey, beautiful.” Julien croons and crouches beside the pool. “You want to come out and say hello?”

Silver shakes her head and drifts towards the middle of the pool.

I look up to find the alphas already staring at my sister. Mitch strips out of his t-shirt and kicks his shoes off. He’s got more muscle than brain.

No! I step between them and scowl.

“Move along.” I say, putting my deepest, most pissed off voice on.

“No, we just want to talk to the pretty omega,” Toby says and brushes his hair back, giving Silver a flirty wink.

Oh, crap. Silver smiles back, and I can smell the candy scent get sweeter, stronger. I almost gag on it, but I'm so busy panicking that I'm not sure if it’s fear or the scent.

“Of course, you do, but you can’t.” I step between them and the pool, but they’re all craning their heads around, flexing muscles, and ignoring me. Mitch’s jeans drop, and now he’s standing there in boxers, licking his lips and flexing bronzed skin.

“Stop! Right now!” I order. “Stop. You stay away!” I shove at Julien, but he just laughs at me and bats me away.

Toby crouches by the side of the pool. His nostrils flare, and he smiles. That smile sends all kinds of alarms screaming through me.

“Silver, get back.” I warn her. “Go to the other side of the pool, get out, and run.”

She doesn’t move.

“Stop. No one move.” I try again. “Silver! Now!”

One of the alphas grabs my wrist and squeezes it as he moves me. I go stumbling, landing hard on my knees. The pain brings tears to my eyes instantly. I wheeze at the throb of fire in my skin.

The alpha is pushed away from me and ends up tripping over a chair. I look up and find a man in a leather jacket standing between me and the alphas. A familiar scent of lemon surrounds me.

No way.

“We can’t touch him.” One of the alphas whispers. “That’s Dylan.”

“Excuse me!” Simon appears between the alphas and glares up at them. “I’ll take care of this situation, alphas. Thank you for your help.”
