“How?” I bark out, interrupting their private meeting. “How are you going to provide those things?”

“By letting you join our party as a guest. A very special guest.” He almost purrs at her, completely ignoring me again. My anger grows, sharpening as I stare at this arrogant man. I bet no one has ever told him no before.

The male omega reaches out and grips my other hand, somehow knowing just when I was about to grab the world’s best boss’ coffee cup and hurl it at his head.

“We’ll provide you with food, clothes, anything you need. Makeup. A stylist. You can meet and indulge in your flirtations and make connections. All I ask is that you sign an NDA and not report anything that happened.”

“I would never do that.” Silver coos. “This place is a dream. I'd love the opportunity to visit.”

“I know you wouldn’t, but my lawyers will kill me if I don't get your signature.” The alpha leans back in his chair, smug and pleased with himself.

The smell of lemon sharpens, turns bitter, and somehow soothes the rage that’s rattling around inside me.

I hate it. I hate him. But it’s what she needs. This is Silver’s chance. It’s a no-brainer, and I hate it.

“I don’t think-” Silvie glances at me, for once hesitant. Vulnerable. “Onyx?”

“You should take it,” I say with a firmness in my voice that I don’t feel. “It’s very generous, thank you, Alpha.”

The asshole still doesn’t look at me.

“Just a question, Alpha, but am I fired?” I ask in a rough voice.

He finally looks at me. Finally sees me, but only for a moment before he dismisses me again. “No. You can continue working for us. Just stay out of sight and keep your head down.”

Got it, Alpha. Do your job and don’t be seen. How many times have I been told that in my life?

He gets to his feet, and we do the same. As he rounds the desk, he moves close to Silver and lifts her hand to his lips and murmurs something. She goes pink and nods her head.

“You can leave.” He says to me without even looking at me. “Dylan, sit down.”

I stare at Silver, but she doesn’t turn around. She just looks like she’s won the lottery, so I start walking towards the door.

I'm shoved suddenly, and I hit the wall hard. I turn and find myself with an omega pressed against me, my front to his back. He’s growling, and the alpha is staring, his mouth and eyes wide.

“Her? Is it her?”

If I wasn’t so afraid, I’d be offended about the way he’s speaking about me, but this alpha wants to hurt me. I can feel it in the air around us. I’ve done something terrible, but I have no idea what.

I move for the door, but the omega, Dylan, I correct myself, grips my wrist. He moves with me, opening the door for us. His touch is warm, comforting. I’m finding I like the way his hand bracelets my wrist.

The alpha is suddenly between us, pulling him back, but Dylan does something I've never seen an omega do before. He lets go of me, takes the shirt of the alpha, slams him against the wall, and growls.

“The beta?” The alpha asks in shock. “No, we thought-”

Dylan slams him into the wall again. This time, with so much aggression that even the alpha falls silent.

The Alpha finally shifts his gaze from the furious omega’s to mine, staring at me like he can’t believe his eyes. I think he finally, really sees me.

I stiffen, standing up straight, and glare back. Alphas are a dime a dozen. I’m not ashamed of what I am, despite how appalled he looks.

Dylan lets out another furious, threatening sound, then he lets go, walks back to me, grabs my wrist, and drags me out of the room.

The door closes, and I glance back, unsettled by how much the look that alpha gave me hurt.
