But she’s waiting for me, and that gives me strength. She’s my shield, she might not ever know it, but I don’t trust my instincts anymore, but I trust hers.

The lift opens the doors on the penthouse, and I find her sitting on the couch. Her arms are wrapped around her chest. But she’s changed out of the dress and is now wearing one of my jumpers and leggings. I can’t help the flare of heat, seeing her like this. I think there’s a shine on her cheeks, but she wipes it away. The smell in the room is full of pain, and the lights are off but for the blue light of the TV that isn’t showing anything.

“Onyx?”

She lifts her head and stares at me. “What are you doing here? I thought…” She cuts herself off and looks away.

I walk around the couches and crouch by her feet. “Come with me.”

“Where?”

“Trust me and come with me.”

She puts her hand in mine and follows as I lead her to the lift. I don’t say a word as I lead her out of the hotel and deep into Grayson’s gardens.

We get to the end of the path, and I stop. My shoulders are tight.

“I’m sorry.”

“Why?”

I can’t look at her. “I brought them down onto you. I…should have known better.”

“I’m confused. Who did you bring down on me?”

“I fell in love with you months ago,” I say in a husky voice. “I am in love with you.”

She’s silent, and suddenly, I need to see her face. I need to know what she’s thinking. I whip around and find her staring at me. She doesn’t look disgusted or appalled. That's a start, but I can’t identify her expression. Perhaps shock?

“Did you hear me, Onyx? I love you.”

She shakes her head. “You have scent matches,” She whisper-shouts. “Do you know how rare that is? You have a pack.”

“And because of my feelings for you…they want you in our pack, too.” I spit out a laugh, trying to dispel the raging chaos inside me. I don’t know what I want, but everything’s driving me towards her, towards this confrontation.

She blinks and staggers, catching herself on a wall of shrubs. “That’s ridiculous. They can’t want me…I’m just a b-”

“Don’t finish that sentence,” I growl, furious.

She presses her lips together, and I think I see agony in her eyes before she shakes her head. “Well, we’ll just have to show them how wrong they are.”

I bite my tongue at the urge to shake her and shout. I get this sinking feeling that this impulse is going to backfire in my face like I’m standing on the side of a road watching two trains collide.

She’s ignoring my confession. At least she heard it. That’s progress.

“You’re upset, Dylan. I don't know what’s going on, but it will all be okay.”

“I’m angry,” I snap.

“At me?” She blinks up at me.

“I just told you I love you.”

She blushes and looks at the end of the path. The pavers spread out and gradually sink into the ground like they were never there. And she ignores me again. The agony of it is…a whole new level of hell.

“We’re like this garden, Dylan.” She waves her hand at the wall of shrubs.

“How so?” I snap.
