“We’re an illusion. A beautiful illusion, but one that isn’t real.”

“Bullshit. I’m real. How I feel about you is real. How you feel about me is real. I know you care…” Am I so desperately fishing for confirmation? Have I sunk so low?

She flinches. “You are an omega with a pack. Who loves you and wants you. You should be in their arms.”

“You want me to go to them? Leave you here alone and get bond marks to take me away from you forever?” I know I’m being cruel, but I don’t care at the moment.

She flinches and turns away from me. “My wants have nothing to do with it. It’s what should be. Omegas need packs.” She says it like she’s said the same thing a million times before. I curse her bitch of a sister.

I gnash my teeth and growl. “Whether I have those bonds or not, you will still be ours. I didn’t tell you to make you afraid. I told you so you’d know what’s going to happen. Not one of us will give up on you. We won’t accept you walking away from this. I needed you to know there will be no choice for you now. They won't allow you to escape.”

She sucks in air but doesn’t turn. I stare at her back in frustration. “You know what it’s like having nothing. You know what it’s like to be cold. Take their hand, Dylan. Take the fairy tale. Don’t look back, not even for me.”

I growl at her, but she turns with a smile. She’s not hearing me. I can’t tell if she’s deliberately not understanding or if she really believes she’s not wanted.

“I’m just glad I could watch and experience it a bit.”

Is she completely insane? Is that all she thinks she’s worth? Scraps? My entire world is rocked by the realisation that this woman can’t see her worth. She’s so blinded that she can’t even acknowledge someone like me expressing my devotion. What even is that? Panic scrapes at my insides, and a desperate whine sounds in the air. She looks towards me but clenches her hands, refusing to step closer. I turn in a tight circle, trying to rein in my emotions, stamp down the omega I've been suppressing all these months.

I need to rethink this. I need to talk to…them.

We fall silent, and I follow her as she leads me back to the hotel, and when she veers off down the employees only section; I don’t follow her. I return to the penthouse, my steps measured, and stand before my alphas.

Grayson lays with his head in Silas’ lap, who gently strokes his hair. I feel an overwhelming desire to crawl over to them and squeeze myself in. Fighting their pull has become almost inescapable. I’m not sure how much longer I can resist.

Why am I resisting?

Maybe I should accept their bonds. But would it change their desire regarding her if I gave in? I can’t take that chance. I have to hold out as long as I can. Onyx and I are a package deal, even if she doesn’t know it yet.

“Dylan, what’s wrong?” Falcon asks as he pads into the room. He puts his hands on my shoulders and ducks down to stare into my eyes.

“I need your help.”

“Whatever you need is yours,” Falcon says without hesitation.

The cloying scent of alphas and omegas is stronger tonight than I've experienced before. This combination makes my stomach curdle.

“How the hell do they live like this?” I mutter and briefly feel sorry for anyone with a nose stronger than a betas.

I catch sight of a pack that I’d thought would be a good fit for Silver. Pack Vore spot me and hesitate. Ian inclines his head slightly and turns away. The two second exchange has me slowing my steps and glancing around nervously.

“Hey, long time no see? How are you loving this job?” Moira whispers in my ear and skips to keep up with me. She’s got an armful of linens and a wicked smile. I try to be happy, but I can’t muster it.

I push open the dining room door and hold it for her while she goes inside. “It's great.” I follow her and scan the room, searching for them even though I know they aren’t here. There are a lot of people milling in between meals, but the tables are emptying, and it’s just the staff rushing to change the room from breakfast to luncheon.

“It’s the best, and the eye candy, too. Primo seats.” Moira's shoulder checks me, and then she reaches out and grabs my wrist. “Come and help me.”

I don’t have anything better to do. I’m not avoiding them, exactly, okay, yes, I’m totally running, but to be fair, I’m almost angry that they are being so ridiculous. Have me in their pack? I’m not falling for that. There’s no way they are serious, and if they are, then they should seek professional help and wake up.

“See that lady there in the gold sitting with your sister?”

I pick her out straight away. I don’t recognise her, but the way she surveys the room makes my stomach tight. She seems cold.

“Who is she?”
