“That's Vienne Hastings, the omega of Pack Hastings.”

Oh…that’s Silas’ mother.

My brain accelerates, snatching all the gossip I can recall about her. Omega, seven mates. Runs the pack rather than bowing to an alpha. Rules the empire. Richer than almost everyone. Rude to the point of cruel. Can make, break, or destroy with a single glance.

And my sister is sitting next to her.

“Don’t you worry about Silver. Those two are two peas in a pod.”

I glance sharply at Moira. “What?”

Moira flushes. “Oh, um, nothing.”

“Has Silver been…”

Moira hisses. “I shouldn’t have said anything. I’m sorry.”

“Onyx, how lovely to see the pack let you out to breathe.”

Warmth spreads through me, and I grin even as I turn. I find myself enveloped by Hazel. She inhales near my neck and pulls away with a frown that disappears instantly.

“Hi, Hazel. How are you enjoying the resort?”

Hazel winces. “You can tell my nagging brother I had a fabulous time and didn’t find a match.”

I reach out and take her hand. “I’m not going to say anything to him, Hazel.”

She looks up, and the bitterness falls from her face. “Nyx, you are one of a kind. No wonder my brother’s obsessed.”

“Yes, well, we know what questionable tastes the Waters have.”

Hazel stiffens. “Hastings.”

The omega might be old, but she’s powerful. Her aura allows nothing near her. Her hair is gunmetal grey, her lips pinched in an unhappy line, but it's those eyes, Silas’s eyes, narrowed in disgust that makes me hold my tongue.

“Your brother’s influence has ruined my family’s chances for a future,” Vienna snarls.

“Get over yourself, you old bitch,” Hazel barks out.

The room goes still around us. Tension turning the air thick and tempestuous.

“Just like your father, abandoning his responsibilities and family to take that…that beta as his bride.”

Hazel rolls her eyes. “With no regrets.”

“Hazel!”

Falcon crosses the room and stops beside us. He edges me away from him. “Moira, Davies, get back to work.”

Moira nods her head sharply and drags me away. But his words slice deep inside me. Hazel glares up at him.

“You idiot,” I hear her whisper before she turns on her heel and stalks in the opposite direction.

I follow Moira and work hard long into the night. Falcon and the pack avoid me. I don’t see Dylan, but that awful woman and Silver disappear early.

I chew my lip, worrying it as I consider what I should do. At the end of the night, I pause by the gold lift and study the button. Am I supposed to go back or not? I check the clock hanging on the wall. It’s after two in the morning. I turn on my heel and make my way out to the pool, where I sit on one of the chairs and gaze at the water.

Steam rises off it in clouds that evaporate. Tonight, I feel as real as those clouds. I kick off my shoes and roll up my cuffs and slip my aching feet into the water.
