Sam left after Anne fell asleep. Anne would be physically all right in a few weeks; she wasn’t sure how she would be mentally. What she knew was there was an outright effort at KnightGuard Security to determine what happened, to understand what the man was looking for. There was no way in hell someone was getting away with hurting her friend or destroying her sense of safety.

Phil was already looking for anything that might have been caught on tape. She’d check in with him when she got to the office to see if he found anything that would help.

Unfortunately, Anne’s neighbors didn’t have security cameras or video doorbells. It was foolish on their part to believe their neighborhood was safe. No neighborhood or person was safe. Crime was everywhere.

First up was a trip to Anne’s house to see what else needed to be done. Then, check in with Marlee, who was at Mark’s house watching Silas. Thankfully, Marlee worked from home as an accountant, so she could bring her computer with her. They decided to keep Silas out of school for a couple of days until Anne came home.

He kept asking about her. Sam understood he saw Anne lying on the ground, bleeding, but felt seeing her in the hospital was too much for the little boy. Everyone reassured him that Anne was fine and would be out of the hospital soon.

She pulled into Anne’s driveway. Killian’s truck and the cleaning crew were here.

Sam took a deep breath and leaned her head on the steering wheel. Sure, she and some of her friends had been attacked or kidnapped. However, they had been dealing with abusive spouses, the mob, or stalkers. Well, in Marlee’s case, it was the murdering CEO who was after her.

However, Anne was a kindergarten teacher, for goodness’ sake. She got along with everyone, never had a bad word to say, and didn’t have crazy stalkers after her that Sam knew of. She was an innocent. None of this made any sense.

Sam got out of the car and walked into controlled chaos.

“Hey, Sam,” called out Killian. He and Ben were installing a security camera in the corner of the living room. “We’ll be done soon. How’s Anne?”

She told them she’d just been at the hospital and Anne would be home soon.

Killian was one of the new hires, and Sam was glad he joined KnightGuard Security. He got along well with the other employees and had a couple of quirks that she knew about regarding marriage and children, but that was his business. What was important was that he thought before he acted, and she knew the employees trusted him to have their back. Important things that most people didn’t think about.

He was also great with the moms and kids at the shelter when he taught self-defense there. She didn’t understand the disconnect between being great with kids and not wanting them. Sam shrugged. To each their own.

It also surprised her he connected with Silas. Killian had been to the house a couple of times to talk to Silas and bring a toy.

Maybe it would be good for Anne to have Killian stay with her until she felt comfortable in the house and safe, especially if he had a relationship with Silas. She’d pass that by him later.

As she investigated the work that had been done on the house, it looked almost normal. The contractors had done a great job of painting and repairing the bathroom door and the walls. No blood remained on the wall or floors. The cleaners were nearly done putting everything back the way it was.

However, she wouldn’t be happy until all the security cameras, new door locks, and window locks were in place.

Ben walked out of the office with supplies in his hands. “This place is going to be more secure than Fort Knox.” He furrowed his brow. “How’s Anne doing?”

“Better. She should be home in a day or so.”

“I gotta tell you, Marlee is in love with Silas. She says he’s funny, quick to catch on, and is just so lovable.” He smiled wistfully. “All these kids are causing havoc in my marriage.”

“Why? Don’t you want kids?” asked Sam.

“Marlee does. I’m concerned because she’s such a tiny woman. A ten-pound baby would kill her.”

Sam rolled her eyes. “You do know that small women have been having babies for thousands of years. And who’s saying it’ll be ten pounds?”

Ben shrugged. “I worry. So kill me.” He set his supplies on the table. “Besides, who am I to say no if Marlee decides to have a baby? The fun part is in making it.”

“Ew. I don’t need to think about you and Marlee having sex.” Sam grinned as she watched Ben turn a nice shade of red.

“Who’s having sex?” asked Killian, who came in for the last part of the conversation.

Ben laughed. “Apparently, me and Marlee, that is, if she wants a kid.”

“Kids are never going to be part of my future,” groused Killian.

“We’ll see. I told you to stay away from the water if you don’t want a wife or kids. We can address that issue in a year,” said Ben. “If it takes you that long.” He winked.

Killian glared at Ben, who was chuckling to himself, and walked away.
