“I’m speechless,” said Anne. “This has been the most wonderful night of my life. It couldn’t get any better than this.”

Now!

Killian pulled out the box in his pocket. He left his chair to kneel beside Anne. “It would be more wonderful if you would say yes to being my wife, the mother of my children, and the privilege of me being a father to Silas. Will you?”

Anne’s mouth was open. She looked at his face, then at the diamond ring he held. Her lip trembled. Tears slipped down her cheeks.

Oh fuck. Had he screwed this up? Was it the wrong time? Should he have waited and gone to a restaurant?

She closed and opened her eyes. “Now the evening is absolutely perfect. I would love to be your wife,” she whispered.

The moon rose higher, shining a bright light on their blanket. Anne looked ethereal as he put the ring on her finger. She stared at it and then leaned over and kissed him.

The irony of this wasn’t lost on Killian. For the man whose future never looked bright and who never considered falling in love, let alone having kids, he found himself not just waiting for the right woman to come along but realizing she’d been waiting for him, too.
