Is Ryker home already?

Did he do this for me?

My heart leaps at the thought.

For him to go to this much trouble after just getting home from a couple of really hard games out on the road is the sweetest gesture.

But then I hear a female voice.

“Ryker. Honey, is that you?”

I pause.

Panic setting in.

I quickly debate the possibility that I walked into the wrong penthouse, but I must have because I don’t have a key to the others and this is obviously Ryker’s place.

I think about turning on my heels and running out of the front door before I see something I can’t unsee, but then I realize that I live here now too. And he's the one who told me that we can't see other people. So it doesn't feel right that I should feel chased out.

A woman finally emerges from the hall in lingerie.

Jealousy and rage bubble up in me instantly. The thought of my two-timing father and how I might have just married the same man has me ready to pack every article of clothing I have in this house and leave, telling Ryker I’ll see him in two years when our time runs out. But I need answers.

And I want them now.

She jumps a little at the sight of me. She must not have been expecting Ryker’s wife to be standing in the kitchen.

“Oh, you must be Ryker’s wife.” She smiles.

But the smile almost seems contrived and who the hell smiles at someone’s wife while standing in lingerie waiting for her husband?

“Who are you and where is Ryker?” I demand, not offering the same pleasantries.

“He’s not home yet. I didn’t realize you lived here.”

“Why wouldn’t I live here? We’re married. And what are you doing here barely dressed for my husband?”

“I’m Amelia. I was Ryker’s girlfriend before you got engaged,” she says, walking out of the hallway and heading closer to me.

Who told her to come closer? I sure as hell don’t want her anywhere near me.

The name Amelia brings up a memory. Tessa had some choice words for her in the Owner’s Box the night Ryker and I got engaged but that night was such a whirlwind I didn’t ask any questions.

“Ok, then if you know he’s married, what the hell are you doing coming into our home dressed like that?” I ask.

“Because I know it’s fake between you two so I figured he might be interested in a girlfriend if he doesn’t have a real wife.”

“Excuse me?” I say, my voice raising in shock and anger that this woman would think she can come in and offer Ryker anything like that when he’s married to me.

Did he tell her that our marriage is fake? She didn’t realize that I live here. Did he tell her that we don’t live together and that she’s welcome to be here?

Ryker is still a stranger to me and I have no idea what to think.

But I do know that the sexy reunion that I thought I’d have in bed with Ryker tonight is definitely not going to happen.

Yes, I was originally fine with an open marriage, back when I thought we’d get married and then I wouldn’t see him again until we had to sign divorce papers. But after our wedding night, things have changed. Or at least I think they have.

“I have to give it to you though. You made out with a better proposal. He didn’t propose to me with a ring.”
