She nods and turns to leave. Al steps into my space and squeezes my shoulder.

“I’ll catch this fucker, Caleb. I won’t stop until I do. Just hang in there.”

Al turns and leaves my house and everyone remains quiet. I keep Aria in my arms and let her scent relax me, before I react stupidly and do something I’ll regret. I’m not thinking like me, and that terrifies me the most.

“Come and get a seat at the table, everyone. I’ve got coffee made, along with sandwiches and cakes. We all need to keep our strength up.” My mom ushers us all to the table and I sit down with Aria beside me.

My mom wraps her arms around me and Aria and kisses our heads. “I’m here for you both, anytime.”

“Thanks, Mom.”

I pick up my coffee cup and take a big gulp. I relish the feel of the burn in my throat. It makes me remember that this is all actually happening. It isn’t some nightmare we can just switch off.
