I walk closer to the vacant side of her bed. I look up and down her lifeless body, wondering how she got these injuries. I won’t settle until I catch every bastard that harmed one hair on Shay’s head.

I take her hand in mine, link our fingers, and feel her rough skin against mine. These hands have caressed every part of my body. Soft, delicate hands. I don’t even recognize them. She would hate this because she always took pride in her nails.

“You can come back to us, baby. We’ve got you.” I lean into her and place a soft kiss on her forehead. She doesn’t budge or make a response to me being near. Her skin feels hot and clammy on my lips. “I’m not going anywhere, Shay. I’ll be right here when you wake up.”

Caleb puts a chair down beside me and I nod to him. I don’t know what to say for the best. Do I talk to her? Do I sit quietly? I’ve never been in this situation with a loved one, and it shows. I feel useless.

“You just have to give her time, bro,” says Caleb.

Time. Time is something we’ve always had to try and beat to get one step ahead, but now we’ve got to rely upon time to heal Shay. I just need to learn some patience and let nature take its course.

“I can do that.” I clear my throat and take a seat at Shay’s bedside.

“I’ll call Carrick and give him an update.”

“Thanks.” I take in a deep breath and let it out slowly.

It’s amazing how everything vacates your mind when you come face to face with a loved one fighting for their life. The only thing that matters is the person lying in the hospital bed. You’d trade places with them in a heartbeat, take their pain and suffering. Do anything to make them well again.
