Chapter 16

Shay

I can hear a constant beeping. It’s driving me crazy, but I can’t place it, and I can’t open my eyes to see where it’s coming from. In fact, I don’t even know where I am. Everything seems so peaceful and calm, a stark contrast to what I’ve become accustomed to. Is this heaven? Am I dead?

“When will she wake up?” I hear.

“I don’t know, bud. We just need to wait and let Shay get her strength back. The body is a wonderful thing.”

Clay! Clay is here. I can hear him. I need to reach him. But everything remains black. It’s like I’m stuck in a dream and there isn’t any way to get out. Am I dreaming? What’s happening to me?

“I don’t know how much longer my mom and dad can sit here, day in and day out, watching her getting thinner. It’s killing me.”

“It sure has been a long seven days, Carrick.”

Seven days. Where the hell have I been for seven days? I try to scream, shout, make any kind of noise that will alert my brother and Clay to my whereabouts.

“Did you see that?” asks Clay “I swear her finger moved on the bed.”

“Shay, sweetheart. It’s Carrick. Can you hear us?”

I can hear you, but you can’t hear me.

“Shay.” A warm hand strokes my cheek and I jump. Between the voice close to my ear and the sudden touch, I’m sent into a spin of emotions. “Come back to us, baby. Let us see those beautiful eyes again.”

Clay has always been able to get a reaction from me with his masculine, silky voice that melts my panties. His rough, calloused hands that make my body scream out for him. Even now, when I can’t see him, he’s making me react in ways I haven’t reacted in so long.

The beeping gets louder and faster. It’s driving me crazy. I want to throw it at the wall and stomp all over the pieces.

Please shut it up!

“Arrgghh!” I scream.

“Shay.”

I hear Clay and Carrick shouting at me now, a louder alarm bellowing, drowning them out.

“Open your eyes, Shay,” says a voice I don’t recognize.

Maybe I am dreaming. Maybe when I open my eyes, I won’t be anywhere near Clay and Carrick.

“Clear the room!” someone else shouts.

“Wait! No, I’m not leaving her like this,” yells Clay.

My heart breaks at the thought of him going through hell because of me. I just need to figure everything out and get myself back to my family.

I will find you, guys!
