Colton pulls Kally’s hand into his and practically drags her to her feet.

“Watch what you’re doing!” I grab his arm and stop him from dragging her away behind him before she’s got her balance.

“She’s not your concern, little brother. Back off,” he growls.

Kally’s eyes land on mine, and I let Colton go. He drags her away like a dog, but in slow motion, I see her crumble to the ground. I’m too far away to reach her, but I do reach her side before Colton.

“Kal, talk to me,”

“It’s too soon,” she sobs.

The puddle that now soaks my knees tells me that this is happening. I want to panic, but I take her chin into my hand and make her look at me.

“Everything will be okay. Colton, get an ambulance,” I yell at him. “I’m going to lift you out of here, okay?”

She grabs my shirt and makes me stall in lifting her. “He won’t protect her when he knows it’s a girl, Clark. Please, make them do everything to save her.”

A girl.

My hand caresses her tummy carefully. I know I shouldn’t, but I can’t help myself. She deserves one act of kindness in this pregnancy because she won’t have had any from Colton and my family.

“I promise.” I smile and lift her from the ground.

Her words play on repeat. How can she be worried about something like that? My fucking brother should be worried about this baby regardless of its gender. Now it all makes sense. The subtle bits of information she dropped into our conversation. She can’t go through this again. She needs an out. She’s known all along she’s having a girl, but she’s lived another lie to protect her unborn child. She clearly didn’t trust that I could keep that secret to myself since she didn’t tell me earlier. I don’t blame her. I’ve become a hothead where all things Colton and Kally are concerned.

“Bring her through here, Clark.” My mother ushers us through to the library, and I lay Kally down on the couch.

“Tell me there’s a nurse or a doctor or something out there.”

When silence surrounds me, I know the answer. We’re alone until help arrives.

“I can’t lose her, Clark. Please.”

“Sshh! You’re not going to. Just breathe through it, sweetheart. Where is her husband? He should be here to help her!” I snap.

Again, silence. The only noise is the cries of pain and distress from Kally. It’s killing me to see her like this. She starts to shake as if she’s cold. I strip out of my jacket and wrap it around her shoulders.

“Someone get her blankets.”

“This isn’t normal, Clark,” Kally cries.

I nod. I might not know anything about pregnant women, but I know what she’s saying is the truth and I can’t lie to her. I won’t.

“Here, bro.” Damien shakes a blanket out and wraps it around Kally’s shoulders. “Dad is on the phone to get help now. They’re a few minutes out.”

Kally doubles over in pain and clutches her hand over her stomach. Damien kneels at her head and wraps her into his arms.

“This can’t happen again,” she sobs into Damien.

Damien nods to get my attention, and I look down at the gold dress Kally’s wearing. It’s now soaked in blood. It dawns on me that’s why Damien is trying to restrict her view in front of us. She doesn’t need to panic any more than she is already.

“What do we do? It’ll be faster taking her to a hospital ourselves.”

“They’re here!” My mom bursts through to the room and takes in the scene that looks like something out of a horror show.

Paramedics push in, and I stand back to give them the room they need to help Kally. Damien is still holding her and looks at me with deep concern on his face.

“Are you dad?” the older paramedic asks Damien.
