“No. I’m brother-in-law.”

They turn to look at me, and I shake my head. “Brother-in-law, but I’ll be there for her.” I swallow the emotion and straighten my shoulders, anticipating the fight I’m going to get from someone, but nothing comes.

They get Kally set up on the stretcher and hooked up to monitors before they push her out of the room.

“Where the fuck did Colton go?” Damien asks.

At this point, my only concern is Kally and her child. My brother is the last thing on my mind.

“Clark, keep me updated,” Lyssa yells after us, and I give her a thumbs up to let her know I heard her.

Colton runs out behind us and pushes me away from Kally’s side.

“Clark…” Kally cries.

I don’t know where Colton ran off to, but this is his child. “I’ll meet you there. I promise,” I say. I pull Colton’s arm and make him stop. “You better have a good fucking excuse for abandoning her there.” Silence. His eyes are thunderous. “If I find out from staff or Kally that you have done anything to hurt her or that baby, I will crucify you.”

He pulls out of my grip and climbs in beside Kally. He doesn’t even take her hand or comfort her. I want to drag him out of there and take his space, but the doors close, and Damien slaps my shoulder and points over to Jared, who’s waiting.

“We’ll follow them.”

“I’m coming too. That’s if you have room for me,” says Lyssa.

“Of course we have. Let’s go.” Damien ushers her over to our waiting vehicle.

I knew tonight was going to be one cluster fuck after another, but this is beyond anything I anticipated.

***

We’ve been sitting in this waiting room for two hours. Colton has looked at his cell, and I’ve paced back and forth with Damien and Lyssa. My parents, Kally’s parents, Jared, and Nancy have sat here too and kept vigil. Anyone looking in would think I was the father because Colton isn’t interested. I want to fucking murder him.

“What’s taking so long?” I growl out my frustration.

Nancy squeezes my hand and pulls me down in the seat beside her. “She’s a strong girl.”

“Her daughter isn’t, though. She’s not even full term, Nancy.”

“What did you say?” Colton sits forward and stares daggers through me.

“Nothing.” I shake my head.

Fuck! Why couldn’t I have said child?

“You said daughter. How do you know?”

I sigh. “She told me when she collapsed in the hall. And I swear to God, Colton, you better hope they both survive.”

He stands up abruptly and kicks over the small coffee table. Nancy and Kally’s mom shriek in surprise. I’m not shocked at all. I know how his little hissy fits go when he doesn’t get his way.

Spoiled brat.

“Not what you wanted, huh?” I stand up and face my brother head-on. I’m not afraid of him. I never have been. That’s what makes him angry. Usually, everyone backs off and lets him get away with his bullshit. Not me. I won’t give in to a bully.

“Fuck you!” he spits and pushes my shoulder.

Damien steps in between us. “Can you two just give it up! Kally is going to need us all. She doesn’t need this stress.”

At that moment, the door is pushed open, and two doctors walk towards us. They can see the mess in front of them, but they hold their hands out to me.
