The silent plea I couldn’t voice. I was locked where I stood and reaching from my depths for Wolf to stop. Bru blinked. “What…”

“Yeah.” Wolf nodded. He brought a curtain of his thick curls out of his face. “I mean, you know about her dad, right? What happened?”

I swallowed as Bru’s attention hit me again. He did know about my dad, but he hadn’t made the connection.

Bru’s eyes closed. “Yeah.”

Another curt nod from Wolf, and at this point, Bow stepped back.

“I’m going to go wake everyone. My texts are having issues going through,” she said, slipping away. I supposed I was right about what she’d been doing, and I think we both knew how out of control this was getting.

Wolf’s finger touched Bru’s chest. “You should have known about that. As her friend, you should have known.”

“Wolf, stop.” I got my voice back, but only in time to watch Wolf’s expression turn deadly. I’d never seen him so angry, and it was all directed at his brother.

“You talk about being her friend? Being there for her?” Wolf’s head cocked. “Meanwhile, I was the one making sure she got down here okay. Mom and Dad said they didn’t know she couldn’t do cars until I—”

The words on his lips paused. Like he’d been in a stupor and finally came out of it. He faced me. “Fawn…”

I left and so damn fast. I didn’t know what he was saying, what I was hearing.

“Fawn!”

Wolf called after me, chasing after me. He got in front of me since he was faster, but when he tried to touch me, I stiffened.

He lifted his hands. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that stuff in front of everyone.”

He was sorry. The first sorry I finally get from him, and it was about spilling my truths and not the myriad of other things he did. “What were you going to say?”

“What?”

“About the cars, Wolf? What were you—” I paused now, and I realized my heart was racing, slamming. “What were you going to tell Bru you did?”

Because it better not be what I thought. It better not be anything remotely close to what I was thinking. I didn’t have the mental capacity to even wrap my thoughts around the possibility of him arranging those shuttles we had on the way here.

No, it wasn’t possible.

Wolf was sifting through his hair again, and the longer he made me wait, the angrier I got. I couldn’t channel my anger on one thing. I just knew that I was mad, and he was the source. He dropped his hand. “I made sure my parents had shuttles ready for you, and before you ask why, you know the reason.”

It was like that day in the woods again where he was spewing nothing but confusing shit and rattling me. I swallowed. “Why would you do that for me?”

Why was he doing any of these things? Letting me sleep…

“Because you obviously weren’t going to handle these things yourself.” He scanned me, as if calculating a response, but all I had for him was more anger. He was literally confusing the fuck out of me right now.

“So, what? Is this some macho thing? A play? An agenda?” The latter accusations made complete sense. My mouth dried. “A way for you to look good in front of your family and make up for all the shit you did to me?”

He blanched as if I slapped him. As if this wasn’t the complete truth and only further emphasized what an asshole he was. His mouth parted. “Fawn, that’s not why I…”

I didn’t care to hear it. His lies. This man had given me enough bullshit for a century, and I turned away only for him to grab me. I sneered. “Let go of me.”

“That’s not why I did it. Christ.” He laced his fingers atop his head. Like I was frustrating him, which was laughable. “I knew you weren’t going to speak to my parents yourself, and you obviously didn’t tell my brother the issue.”

The issue, meaning me. I laughed, and Wolf frowned.

“You didn’t make accommodations for yourself, so I did,” he said, his expression serious. “I did, and I don’t fucking care what people think about that. I didn’t do it for them.”

And he expected me to believe he did it for me? Honestly, and without any agenda? I laughed again, shaking my head. “You wanted to look like the hero, Wolf, and as per usual, what a class fucking act you continue to be.”
