“What do you mean?”

“I mean, that shit you pulled during the storm,” I shot, and it took all I had not to lose my shit. He was still up to his fucking antics. Using me… “You came through last night like a hero. Being there when you knew what would happen when you found out about the party. Bru told me he texted Dorian we were going, and he clearly told you.”

“Fawn—”

“Then you clearing the house so I could fucking sleep!” I called, raising and dropping my hands. “Bow told me that was your idea and what a hero you looked like then.”

Wolf’s mouth turned down, his head shaking. “Fawn…”

“And you dragged everyone here so they could see the Academy Award–winning production pan out—”

His hands hit the side of the house, his body crowding mine, caging me.

“I dragged no one here,” he said, growled. “I came, and Dorian followed. Thatcher and Wells met us out here. They had the car, and they came so Dorian and I wouldn’t have to head back into the storm on foot. They’re also all my best friends and wanted to have my back.”

Heat rolled off him, pouring into me. His smell hit me again, and I didn’t like it.

It hurt.

It hurt so badly just like his arms around me last night and his comforting words. He knew exactly what to do last night. Exactly how to come through for the broken girl. My throat thickened, my eyes itchy, glassy. “You expect me to believe you walked in a fucking storm…”

“Ran actually,” he said, pushing off the wall. “Five miles.”

Five… miles.

Wolf’s throat jumped. He blinked away, and I thought I would cry. “Why?”

I shoved him before he could answer, then hit his big stupid arms. He didn’t move one inch, completely unaffected. He sighed. “Fawn…”

“Why, Wolf? Why would you ever—”

“Because I fucking love you, Fawn!”

I dropped my hands, gasping, reeling.

Wolf raised a hand. “Because I’m in love with you.”

I’m in love with you.

I shook my head, stepping back, and Wolf followed. Between the dark circles under his eyes and the look he was giving me, he appeared physically pained. Like he was in pain to admit this.

Maybe he was. Maybe it hurt just as much as it did for me to hear it. “I don’t understand.”

It was like he was speaking a different language, one I didn’t know and was too fucked up to understand. He was the one who fucked me up. Broke me.

Wolf’s teeth clamped his lower lip, and eventually, my back touched the wall. He’d closed the distance.

And when he breathed me in…

His eyes closed, his forehead touching the space above my head. He was always so big, tall. “You were right about everything, and I know… I know I have no fucking right.”

I was shaking at this point, and I felt that when he touched my cheek and placed so much warmth into my skin. When he made me feel things I didn’t want to feel…

No… stop.

I didn’t know if I was telling him or myself. I just knew this fucking hurt, and I hated it.

Wolf’s hand was so big. It covered basically the whole side of my face, and he was shaking too, trembling. He placed his other hand on the cabin as if to stabilize himself.
