“Let the girl have her candy, you turkey-vulture-looking asshat,” Bear grumbled from the other side of the cubicle wall on her right before she could say anything.

“You know those are actually very clever birds,” Parvo said.

Bear snorted. “Yeah, I wasn’t comparing your brains.”

Ignoring the two men’s usual bickering, Astrid opened the plastic wrapper and took a bite. Peanut butter and chocolate had never tasted quite so good before.

She really should do something to say thank you to Cal. She could manage to do that and keep all of her clothes on.

Maybe.

Somehow.

She’d figure it out.

Chapter Thirty-One

ASTRID: Did you get your mail today?

CAL: Yeah.

ASTRID: And was there anything interesting?

CAL: You mean my utility bill?

ASTRID: Nothing else?

CAL: The rest was junk mail. I tossed it in the lobby trash can.

ASTRID: GO DOWN THERE RIGHT NOW AND GET IT!

CAL: Why, did you send me explicit fantasies from your diary?

ASTRID: I know better than to ever write any of that down.

CAL: So you’re going to tell me in person?

ASTRID: Cal, focus. Go downstairs and go through the trash.

CAL: Am I looking for a Shake-A-Week gift card from Vito’s?

ASTRID: You are a giant jerk. They only sell five of those a month. I had to trade Ice Knights tickets just to buy one since they usually only sell them by raffle, and then they only give you a tracking number for when they mail them out, never a digital copy.

CAL: That seems intense.

ASTRID: Only those with the gift card can get the secret shake flavors. They’re legendary.

CAL: And why did you do all of that for me?

ASTRID: I know the Diet Cokes were mine anyway, but it’s been fun to imagine what’s coming next. It’s made me feel special. Thank you.

CAL: The Diet Cokes may not be me.

ASTRID: Whatever, Cal. Say thank you for the shakes.

CAL: How about I do that in person and we can share one of the secret shakes?

ASTRID: That seems like it could result in a violation of the Panty Accords.
