It felt wrong to not be kicking his bike to life this instant and tearing off into the night, but Devil had a point. Griz tapped outDon’t trust Ripperon a text and sent it to Becca before starting up his motorcycle.

His phone vibrated before he could get it into gear. It was Becca, texting back.

He’s here now.

“Fuck,” Griz said, and hit the throttle.

Becca was just settling in, all comfy in her robe, when the doorbell rang.

She peeked through the peephole in the door and her eyebrows raised in surprise. Ripper, standing on the stoop, looking like he was going door to door selling vacuum cleaners.

Becca couldn’t imagine what would bring Ripper out here at this time of night. He was probably looking for Griz, or maybe he thought Wyatt was here.

“Oh, hey, Ripper,” she said, opening up the door. “Sorry, I’m still getting used to calling people names like that. I’m used to crazy names like Bill and Michael.”

He actually gave her a little smile at her joke and said, “It’s fine. How are you, Becca?”

“Oh, you know,” she said, twirling a little in her robe as if it were a fine ball gown, “living the dream.”

“Where’s Kate?” he asked.

“The hospital. Where else? Why? Did you need her for something?”

Ripper seemed to ignore the question. “So you’re here alone?”

“For the moment. Griz said he had something he had to do and that he’d stop by later.”

“That’s why I’m here,” Ripper said.

“Why?”

“To keep an eye on you,” he said.

“Keep an eye on me?” Becca said.

“Make sure nothing happens to you, you know?” Ripper said quickly. “I’d hate to see Death’s Head show up here like at the cabin.”

“I don’t know how they’d know I was here,” Becca said.

“Still. Better safe than sorry, you know?”

“Right, right,” Becca said. “Oh, gosh, come in, come in. Where are my manners, right?”

“Thank you,” Ripper said, stepping inside and looking around. “I thought maybe at least Wyatt would be here.”

“Yeah, he could chase the bad guys off with one of his crutches,” Becca said.

“Don’t underestimate him, even with a shot leg.”

“Oh, well,” Becca said, “That’s why Kate’s at the hospital. She took Wyatt there. I think he’s watching Boomer.”

“Good, good,” Ripper said. “We need to keep everybody safe. Right?”

“Sure. Safe is good. I like safe.”

“Of course you do,” Ripper said, still looking around the living room, into the kitchen, wherever he could. “You keep a gun around here or anything?”
