“It isn’t simply about justice, Becca,” Wyatt said. “It’s about keeping them from coming back out here and doing it again. You were right, Griz, they aren’t going to stop. We need to do something.”

Becca was trying to come up with a response to that when she spotted a tall, bearded man approaching them. Dressed in jeans and a leather jacket, he wore the same cut as Wyatt and Griz… he was a part of their MC.

“Who’s this guy, Chewie, your dad?” she said with a little laugh.

“Yeah,” Griz said.

“What?” Becca said. “Oh.”

I am really off my game, she thought.I go to make a snarky comment and it ends up being correct. He actually is the Wookie’s dad.

“His name’s Boomer,” Wyatt said. “He’s the club president.”

“Are you guys all right?” the older Wookie said once he joined them.

“Yeah, we’re fine, Dad, but a civilian got run over,” Griz said. “Pregnant lady.”

“Oh, God. How bad was she hurt?” Boomer said.

“Pretty bad,” Wyatt said. “Kate did what she could, but it wasn’t looking good. I mean, I’m no doctor, but…”

“Right,” Boomer said. “Where is she now? Kate?”

“She went with the ambulance to the hospital.”

“Hmm,” Boomer said with a smile. “Of course she did. Hell of a lady, that Kate.”

“It was my fault,” Griz said.

“What are you talking about?” Wyatt said.

“I was strapped,” Griz said. “I should’ve shot him.”

“With all of these people around?” Boomer said. “No, no, you made the right choice.”

Griz looked down at the street, at the spot where the injured woman had been lying. “Doesn’t feel like it.”

“Sometimes there’s no perfect answer,” Boomer said. “Only bad choices to pick from.”

Dang, Becca thought.Older Chewie has some wise words. Or maybe he just read a fortune cookie.

“We have to do something, Dad,” Griz said.

“Yes,” Boomer said. “Yes, we do. But we have to tread carefully. The last thing we want is open war on the streets. Think of how many innocents will get caught up in that.”

Becca felt more than a little uncomfortable, standing there while three outlaw bikers casually discussed their gang warfare business in front of her. All she’d wanted was peace and quiet and normalcy, something solid so she could get her feet back underneath her, and instead, everything was turning into a tornado of chaos.

“Who’s the responding officer?” Boomer said.

“Mackenzie,” Griz answered.

“Oh, good,” Boomer said. “One of ours.”

“What does that mean?” Becca said, then bit her lip.

There I go again, using my outside voice when I shouldn’t, she thought.

“Dad, this is Becca, Kate’s sister,” Griz said. “She’s visiting from out of town.”
