“I remember the name,” Boomer said. “You got mixed up in that business with Kate and Wyatt and his ex-wife, if I recall correctly.”

“Oh, you recall correctly,” Becca said. “I still can’t see a picture of a lizard without thinking of that evil witch.”

“And now you have the bad luck to come visit and see something like this happen,” he said.

Becca shrugged. “If I didn’t have bad luck, I’ve have no luck.”

“I’m Boomer,” the older man said. “It’s nice to finally meet you. What were you all talking about when I arrived?”

“She got a good look at the driver, Dad,” Griz said. “And saw the license plate.”

“I told you, Chewie, forget it,” Becca said. “I am not getting involved in your stupid gang shoot ‘em up shit.”

“It doesn’t necessarily have to go like that,” Wyatt said.

“Don’t bullshit me, Wyatt. You’re going to hunt him down and put a hundred bullets in his ass.”

Griz nodded. “That sounds about right.”

“Griz,” Wyatt said.

“What? I’m not going to lie to her.”

“And then what?” Becca said. “You shoot their guy, and then they come back and try to do the same thing to you. Everything escalates. So then more people get shot up, and maybe another innocent bystander ends up getting hurt.”

“This has to be taken care of, Becca,” Wyatt said.

“You don’t understand,” Becca said. “None of this had to happen. He only did what he did because you made it a point to confront him. Here, with all these people around.”

“He didn’t give us a choice,” Griz said.

“Of course you had a choice!” Becca said. “You could’ve just let it go! Who cares if he’s sitting there ‘in your territory’ or whatever dick-swinging shit you say?”

“You’re the one who told us he was there,” Wyatt said. “That he scared you.”

“Oh, don’t you dare,” Becca said. “Don’t you dare put this on me. If I knew you two were going to provoke a shooting and a hit and run, I never would’ve said a thing.”

“There was a shooting?” Boomer said.

“The guy spotted us, peeled out, sprayed down the street with a Mac-10 as he drove past,” Wyatt said. “Didn’t hit anybody. I guess he wasn’t paying attention to what was right in front of him, though, and that’s why he hit that lady crossing the street.”

“If you had just stayed in the restaurant, nothing would have happened,” Becca said.

“Actually,” Griz said, “he might’ve been waiting out there for us to leave so that he could try a drive-by on us then.”

“You don’t know that,” Becca said.

“I know that if we let things lie, they only get worse.”

“Worse than this?” Becca said, gesturing around at the police car and the scene of the accident. “I saw her get hit, Griz. Right in front of me.”

“Becca,” Boomer said gently.

Becca paused to calm herself down. “Yes?”

“I understand this is all… madness to you,” Boomer said.

Becca snorted. “No shit.”
