“Okay, Chewie,” Becca said. She did suppose it was sweet of him to make sure she felt safe, but she was a long way from thinking of him as a knight in shining armor.

Boomer, on the other hand, was another story. He was clearly the sort of guy who knew a lot more than he let on.

“You know that Ripper knew what happened last night before he asked you about it in there,” Becca said.

“Yes,” Boomer said. “He was trying to direct the conversation.”

“And apparently to start a war,” Becca said.

“Which you have helped us to avoid. Is that why you agreed to help?”

“Well, that, and that he really annoyed me,” Becca said. “I mean, Little Miss Fancypants? Who calls someone that?”

“He can be a little trying on a person’s patience.”

“Why do you put up with him?”

“As a leader, you don’t always have the luxury of leading only people whose company you enjoy,” Boomer said. “But the job remains.”

“Yeah, well, if he hadn’t have gotten sassy with me, I might not have…” Becca stopped for a moment as some of the pieces fell into place for her in her mind. “Hang on, is that why you had me come out here?”

“What do you mean?” Boomer asked.

“You knew that Ripper was going to use this situation as an excuse to push for an all-out war.”

Boomer shrugged. “Let’s say I suspected.”

“And you were worried that he might talk the others into that war,” Becca said.

“Amongst other things,” Boomer said. “Ripper has advocated for quite some time that the MC take a... let’s call it a darker turn.”

“But if I was here…”

“I wanted to make sure we had another option,” Boomer said. “A better one. And a good advocate for that better option.”

“Why couldn’tyoujust tell them?” Becca said.

“I have,” Boomer said. “Many times, over the years. But hearing it from me, again… it starts to get old. But if someone else comes along, someone convincing… it might get their attention a little more effectively. Shake them out of hearing the same old arguments from the same old players.”

“Speaking of players,” Becca said. “I’m starting to feel like I got played.”

“Don’t,” Boomer said. “You had a choice. You still do. You could walk away from all of this, and then Ripper would get his way, and a war would break out between Death’s Head and this MC, and lead us down a path full of imperfect solutions.”

“And a lot of innocent people would get caught in the crossfire,” Becca said. “Including Kate.”

“Possibly.”

“How did you know I could do it?” Becca said. “Convince the others?”

“Let’s just say I recalled your sister telling me about how good you were at your job. And then I remembered how you were able to assist her with her legal troubles with Wyatt’s ex-wife, even though you’ve never worked as a trial attorney.”

Older Griz is a lot smarter than he lets on, Becca thought.A lot smarter.

“I won’t forget what you’re doing for us, Becca,” Boomer said. “And for our town. I know that may not seem like a big deal, but believe me when I tell you, we can be very good friends to have in your corner.”

“Well, you should probably save the gratitude for after it’s worked,” Becca said.

“I have every confidence in you. May I ask you a personal question?”
