“When you say, ‘face down our enemies’,” Becca began to say, but she was drowned out by everyone in the room… except Ripper… voting “Aye” for her idea to go to the cops.

Which, she now started to suspect, was really Boomer’s idea.

“So,” Becca said, once most of the men had cleared out of the meeting room. “That happened.”

“Hey, you did great,” Griz said.

“I don’t feel like I did great,” she said. “I feel like I just painted a bullseye on my forehead.”

“It’ll be fine,” Griz said.

“So, things might get a little crazy around here, hunh?” Devil said, bouncing up and down on the balls of his feet. “Don’t worry. I can set up some spycams around your house, maybe even some booby-traps… Ooo! I know! I’ll…”

“That’s really not going to be necessary,” Becca said.

“No?” Devil said, sounding disappointed. “Well, if you change your mind, I’m here. Oh, hey! You want a Glock?”

He handed her a pistol that seemed to materialize out of nowhere, shoving it towards her butt-first. She recoiled back from it like a live rattlesnake.

“Jesus Christ, Devil!” she said. “Is that thing loaded?”

Devil frowned. “Wouldn’t do you much good if it wasn’t.”

“And you just hand loaded Glocks to people?”

Devil shrugged. “I got, like, eight of ‘em. Nine! I meant nine. I have nine.”

“Well, just… keep that one,” Becca said.

“Are you sure? They’re really great. Light, reliable. They’re actually made out of this ceramic polymer stuff that…”

“She doesn’t like guns, Devil,” Griz said, gently pushing the pistol back in Devil’s direction.

“Okay,” Devil said, putting the gun back in his waistband. “But I was serious about those booby-traps. You just say the word, and I’ll…”

“You’ll be the first person I’ll call,” Becca said.

“Great, great,” Devil said, nodding enthusiastically. “Okay, gotta go. Some new prospect I have to meet.”

“That Pony guy?” Griz said.

“Yeah. The dude was like a Marine or something. I don’t know. Haven’t met him yet. Later!” Devil said, and bounced out of the room like a caffeinated rabbit.

“Please don’t let him booby-trap Kate’s house,” Becca said.

“He’s just a little enthusiastic,” Griz said.

“That’s one word for it,” Becca said. “So is ‘Adderall’.”

“Actually, I’m pretty sure that’s all natural for Devil.”

“God,” she said. “It must be exhausting.”

Boomer approached the two of them and said, “Son, could I have a moment to speak to Becca privately before she leaves?”

“Sure, Dad. I’ll be right out here in the bar, Becca.”
