Griz seemed to think that over for a second before answering. “You worked really hard, right?”

“I put in a lot of hours, but…”

“And then you got fired?”

“Okay, I’m kind of drinking to forget all that, but yes.”

“It sounds like in your regular life, you worked really hard only to get screwed by your bosses for doing the right thing.”

Becca blew out a breath. “Ouch.”

“In my life,” Griz said, “I do what I want to do, when I want to do it. Nobody can tell me otherwise. If I have problems, I have a group of guys who would die to help me.”

“When you put it like that, it does have its appeal,” Becca said. “But the violence, Chewie. All of that violence.”

“Freedom is risky.”

Becca went to say something, but had to stop. The Wookie had just made a lot of sense, out of nowhere.

“That’s actually pretty deep,” she said.

“It’s something my dad says all the time.”

Becca slapped the bed in frustration. “See, don’t… do that.”

“Do what?” Griz said.

“Any time your dad starts to talk, or Wyatt, you tend to clam up and let them do all the talking.”

“They’re smart. Smarter than I am.”

“There,” Becca said. “Right there, that. Stop doing that.”

“What?” Griz said.

“You always take a back seat. I see you do it all of the time. Like you don’t have anything to contribute. Well, you do.”

Griz shrugged. “They’re smarter than me.”

“Maybe they are and maybe they’re not,” Becca said. “I’m not convinced of that. But no matter what, you’re a grown ass man and you have a perfectly functional brain.”

Now Becca had to stop and pause again. She’d actually just surprised herself with her own words, giving Griz credit for being smarter than he appeared. She hadn’t realized that was her feeling on the subject until she’d actually said the words out loud.

Had she been underestimating Griz this entire time? Was he really a lot smarter than he let on, more capable than he let on?

Maybe it was the wine, maybe it was the conversation, but Becca felt more confused than before. Still, at least the conversation was moving forward and Griz was continuing to use his words. That was something.

“I don’t know,” Griz said. “Sometimes I just feel more comfortable letting other people take the lead.”

“Well, maybe you should start taking charge a little more,” she said.

“It’s different for you.”

“What does that mean?”

“I always felt like I was dumb,” Griz said. “You know, just not as good at stuff. But you’re really smart, too. Like my dad. Like Wyatt. Like Kate.”

“Hunh,” Becca snorted. “I am not as smart as Kate.”
