Wyatt and Kate showed up at the cabin first thing in the morning, Wyatt on his motorcycle followed closely by Kate in her car. Becca watched out of the kitchen window as the two of them unloaded groceries out of the back of Kate’s car.

Oh, good thinking, Kate, Becca thought. She didn’t realize until now how hungry she was, and from the sound of it, nobody had been out to the cabin for a while. The refrigerator was definitely empty.

As glad as she was to see her sister, Becca did not look forward to the inevitable tongue-lashing she was going to get for running off on her own. The second Kate came in through the front door, Becca was there to intercept her, talking before Kate had a chance to say a word.

“Before you freak out and demand to know why I left…” she said quickly.

“You didn’t want anyone else getting hurt because of you,” Kate said, cutting her off.

“Well,” Becca said. “Yes. I had a whole speech prepared, but now it appears I won’t need it.”

“I know you, Becca,” Kate said. “But you really should’ve known better than to run off all alone. Thank God Griz was there to follow you.”

“Uh, yes,” Becca said. “Yes.”

This was going to potentially get weird, her whole hooking up with Griz and all, and frankly, Becca didn’t want Kate knowing about that just yet. There would be lots of questions, and more questions on top of those questions, and really, Becca herself didn’t know any of the answers yet.

“I know he’s not your favorite person to be around,” Kate said, “but…”

“Oh, hey, it’s fine,” Becca said, waving that off and hoping that her wave would make the whole line of questioning go away.

It didn’t.

“I mean, what did you guys talk about?” Kate said.

“Um, nothing,” Becca said. “Flannel. Nothing, really, look… I’m really glad you’re here.”

“You’re sure you’re not hurt?” Kate said.

Nothing other than my wrist being sore, Becca thought, but what she said was, “Nope. I’m fine.”

Griz and Wyatt came in through the front door, and Kate immediately grabbed Griz and gave him a hug.

“Griz,” she said. “Thank you so much for looking after her.”

“Of course, Kate,” Griz said.

“And you’re okay?” Kate said.

“Fine,” Griz said. “I had a bulletproof vest on.”

The four of them began putting away the groceries from Kate’s car, leaving some out so they could start making breakfast.

“And it was definitely Death’s Head that came after you, I take it?” Wyatt said.

“Yeah,” Griz said. “It was that guy Skinny.”

“No shit. Is he dead?”

“I don’t think so,” Griz said.

“No, he’s not dead,” Kate said. “I called a friend of mine who works in a hospital out that way. That’s where they took him. I don’t know what you did to him, but he’s in the ICU.”

“I threw him over the railing,” Griz said.

“Yeah, and he landed on my rental car,” Becca said, cracking eggs into a bowl so she could scramble them.
