“Were you listening to anything I just said?”

“Yes, no, I wasn’t…” Becca said, glancing over at Griz’s big, bearded face to see if he was on to her investigations, “I was a big… I mean, a little distracted.”

Careful, Becca, she thought. The last thing you need is the Wookie thinking that you want what he’s hauling around in those pants. No more peeking.

For now, a little voice added in the back of her head.

“It’s so strange that those Bone Faces guys are still creeping around,” she said, mostly just to fill the air with words and cover up any possible suspicion of her dick investigations. “I mean, after they got messed up in the alley that one time, and then later, didn’t you guys jump them again?”

“Death’s Head,” Griz said helpfully.

“What?”

“They’re called Death’s Head.”

“Whatever.”

“Yeah, I’m sure they’ve got mixed feelings about it. After what happened last time, I don’t think they could talk Skinny and Lou into trying to walk back into our territory again,” Wyatt said, adding with a grin, “Well, limp, not walk.”

“Wyatt shot Skinny in the foot,” Griz explained, laughing along with Wyatt.

Becca tried her best not to roll her eyes at the man-banter. “Oh, that is hilarious. Shooting someone in the foot. Great fun.”

“Don’t be a killjoy, Becca,” Wyatt said.

“I am not a killjoy!” Becca said. “I am Miss Joy! Everybody knows I’m the good time sister!”

“The what?” Griz said.

“Bad choice of words,” Becca said. “I’m the fun sister, the trouble maker. Kate was always the straight edge.”

“I guess not anymore,” Wyatt said with a laugh.

Kate looked back and forth from Becca to the men and said, “Guys? Maybe Becca and I can have some Girl Time?”

“That’s our cue, Big Man,” Wyatt said, slapping Griz on the knee. “Let’s ride.”

“Nice seeing you, Becca,” Griz said as he rose to leave.

“Okay, Chewie,” she said, struggling to not glance down and see if she was right about his bulge.

Once they were gone, she had to hold back the urge to bang her face against the wall until her head popped off.

“Ugh. Everything’s ruined. My life is officially over.”

“It’s not,” Kate said. “It just feels that way right now since the damage just happened. Spend a few days here, we’ll have some fun, you’ll get some distance from this. Then everything will feel better and you’ll be able to see a clear path forward.”

“Maybe.”

Kate stood up. “Let’s go out tonight. Wyatt and I were going to go to this place in town, this new restaurant that just opened.”

Becca shrugged. “Does the Wookie have to come?”

“Becks. He’s got a crush on you.”

“Yeah, I noticed,” Becca said. “Look, I’m not trying to be mean, I just… he’s really not my type, you know? And to have him keep, you know, trying… I just don’t want him to get the wrong idea.”

“Well,” Kate said, “let’s not worry about any of that. Let’s not worry about anything at all. Tonight, all your thoughts will be worry free.”
