“He’s also a genius with anything to do with computers, or tech, or anything like that,” Wyatt said.

“So, perfect,” Becca said. “Let’s go talk to Benny.”

“There’s a problem,” Wyatt said.

“Back while we were having our problems with Wyatt’s ex-wife,” Kate explained, “some Death’s Head guys came out to his place and scared him. He’s already paranoid and thinks everyone is out to get him, and when they showed up… he blamed Wyatt.”

“It was kind of my fault,” Wyatt said.

“Anyway, they haven’t been on speaking terms,” Kate said.

“That’s it?” Becca said. “Let’s just go out there and try it.”

“I’m telling you, Becca, he’s not… stable,” Wyatt said. “He doesn’t want to see anybody, and he can be very difficult about it.”

“Hey,” Becca said. “You’re talking to Miss Persuasion, here. I’m sure I can make friends with him.”

“I don’t know…” Wyatt said.

“Oh, don’t be such a quitter,” Becca said. “You said this guy is a computer genius, and we need answers, so let’s at least go out to see him and ask.”

Wyatt looked at Griz, who shrugged as an answer to the unspoken question.

“You know him better than I do,” Griz said.

“Okay,” Wyatt said. “Let’s go see Benny.”

They weren’t kidding when they said that Benny lived out in the middle of nowhere.

First, they drove out some back roads, a drive that seemed to take forever. Becca wasn’t even sure what county they were in any more, and she was doing the navigating.

Griz was driving Kate’s car, so that Wyatt could sit in the back with his shot leg and Kate could help him out in case he needed it. After a while, something jogged Becca’s memory and she remembered driving out this way to pick up Kate back when she and Wyatt had first started dating and had run into some trouble.

“There,” Wyatt said.

‘There’ referred to a tiny dirt road, which was blocked off by a chain hung between two metal posts. Griz stopped the car, got out, and moved the chain, stopping again once they’d driven past it so that he could replace it behind them.

Then, it was down the narrow dirt road, so narrow that the brush on either side scraped on the sides of the car as they drove along. Finally, they came to a wide clearing, and in the middle, there was a trailer with a gigantic satellite dish.

Becca guessed this had to be their destination, since Griz brought the car to a halt in the clearing. There seemed to be no signs of life out here, other than the trailer, but that proved to be deceiving.

They had barely eased Wyatt out of the back seat and onto his crutches before the trailer door sprang open with a slam. A short, mildly chubby man wearing a T shirt and poorly fitting cargo pants shot out of the doorway, brandishing a metal rake.

Becca’s heart jumped at the noise and the sudden movement, but nobody else seemed particularly concerned at the sudden chaos.

“Hey, Benny,” Wyatt said.

“No!” Benny said, waving his rake in the air as he rapidly approached. “I was very clear. Very clear. So clear that it was clear. No!”

“Benny,” Wyatt said, shifting on his crutches so that he could hold his hands up. “Benny, look, I…”

“They invaded my home, Wyatt,” Benny said, waving his rake as he paced back and forth. “Invaded like invaders. Very aggressive. Very, very aggressive.”

“This is not going to go well,” Griz said quietly.

“It was Linda, my ex-wife,” Wyatt said. “She sent them, not me.”
