“That’s because you guys suck and don’t know what’s good,” Carly said. “But we do, right, Benny?”

“Indeed. What’s good is good and good is good.”

“Exactly,” Carly said.

“Where did she get the Velveeta?” Pony said, still a little thrown off. “I mean, obviously not from our kitchen.”

“She carries it in her purse,” Piper said, shaking her head almost sadly. “Don’t ask. So, if you guys aren’t too busy, maybe you can help us figure out how to handle, you know, all the problems?”

“Yeah, sure,” Carly said, finally setting aside the video game controller. “Benny, this is my sister, Piper.”

“Pleased to, pleased to meet you,” Benny said.

“We’ve met already, Benny,” Piper said. “A bunch of times. I’ve been working at the bar downstairs for months. We’ve met.”

“No,” Benny said, shaking his head. “No.”

“Yes, we…”

“No.”

“Benny…” Piper said.

“Just… let it go,” Pony said. “Trust me.”

“Anyway, Benny,” Carly said, “her boss is a super dickhead guy who’s trying to get her in trouble.”

“Awful,” Benny said. “Terrible. Abuse of authority.”

“Yeah, right? He’s into all kinds of sketchy stuff and we need to figure out a way to catch him. Didn’t you say you were like, super good with phones and stuff? Like, sneaking your way onto them and spying on people?”

“Yes. Oh yes. Wireless communication is a specialty. Encryption, de-encryption, re-encryption…”

Piper said, “He’s a supervisory special agent for the FBI. My boss.”

“Mmm. Mmmmm,” Benny said, nodding as he thought it over. “Difficult. Very difficult. Safeguards in place. Security levels. Eyes watching, doors locked, very difficult. Very difficult.”

“See?” Piper said. “I knew this was a waste of…”

“Not impossible,” Benny said.

Carly slapped him on the leg. “Now we’re talking, Benny! Let’s go!”

“How would we do that, Benny?” Pony asked. “Get onto his phone?”

Benny looked him up and down. “Who are you, again?”

“Benny!” Pony said.

“Maybe,” Devil said, “maybe I should talk to my dude here.”

“Ah, yes. Devil. Thank you for coming,” Benny said, as if he’d sent out formal invitations.

“Uh, sure thing, Benny.” Turning to Piper and Pony, he said, “Seriously. You guys wait downstairs. I got this.”

“Carly can stay,” Benny blurted out. “She can stay.”

Carly looked at Piper and shrugged, as if it were a small victory she’d just won. “Catch up with you losers later.”
