“Because I have been eager to kill you for quite some time. Ever since the first time we met, actually.”

“You’re in for a disappointing night.”

“I don’t think so. And the other one with you must be Harris’s little pet, Piper.”

“I’m nobody’s pet, asshole,” Piper said. “I’ll remind you of that when I put the cuffs on you.”

“What an active imagination you have, Agent Piper. I don’t think you’ll be putting the cuffs on anyone ever again. The FBI thinks you’re a criminal in league with the very MC you were tasked to infiltrate.”

“Not for long.”

“Oh, yes, you think that with Steven in hand, you can clear your name and get back in the good graces of the Bureau.”

“Navarro,” Harris said quickly, “Navarro, you get me out this, and I can make this right, I can…”

“Be silent, Steven,” Navarro said. “Our relationship has been fruitful for many years, yes, but at this point, it seems you have outlived your usefulness. Indeed, you have become quite a liability.”

Harris swallowed hard on a dry throat. “Navarro, don’t do this.”

“Steven, Steven. I told you before. A man must pay his debts. And this is your final payment to me. Your life. As for you two, Pony and Piper… I am a man who believes in being thorough. So neither of you will need to make any plans for tomorrow. You won’t be alive to see the sunrise.”

The line clicked off.

The house was quiet, very quiet. Piper strained her ears to hear any sign, any sign at all that more cartel killers werecreeping up on the house under the cover of the sniper shooting through the windows.

“We’re so fucked,” Harris whispered.

Piper said, “Calm down.”

“You don’t understand. Navarro’s hitters are top of the line. They’re ex-Mexican federal army. Trained by US Special Forces to fight the cartel, then they flipped and joined the same cartel they were supposed to be fighting.”

“Ithoughtthose guys at the park were good,” Pony said.

Piper slid over to Pony, careful to stay low under the windows. “What do you think, Pony?”

“If it were me, I’d have the sniper pin us down while another team moved in to assault,” he said.

“Yeah, that’s what I figured,” Piper said. “Do you think we…”

“Listen,” Harris said, interrupting her. “You two need to keep me alive. You hear me?”

“Settle down,” Piper said.

“I’m serious. I can… I will testify, flip on Navarro. Get you free and clear with the Bureau. Get me a deal, I can give the Bureau everything they need to dismantle the cartel from the inside out.”

“Pony?”

“Sounds good to me,” Pony said with a shrug. “I’d love to see Navarro disappear in a permanent way.”

“But you have to get me out of here alive, you understand?” Harris said. “Get me out of here, and into protective custody, and I’ll do whatever you want.”

“So, all we have to do is fight off an army of trained killers, and convince the FBI to let us bring you in while not shooting us on sight, all while keeping you alive?” Piper said. “Thought you were going to make it hard or something.”

“You know what they say,” Pony said. “Nothing worth having is easy.”

“What about me?” Piper said with a smile.

“Hunh. You weren’t easy. Anything but.”
