“Could you two have your moment later?” Harris snapped. “Right now, we need to focus on staying alive, or they are going to kill us and put our bodies in a barrel of acid to…”

“Shut up, Harris. I’ve half a mind to let Navarro have you.”

“We need him, Piper.”

“Shame, isn’t it? How should we do this? Set up a line a fire facing that way…”

“Hang on,” Pony said, looking with interest at a set of keys hanging from a peg on the kitchen wall. “Those keys aren’t to the minivan I saw you driving the other day, Harris.”

“No, it’s…” Harris began, then said, “No. No, no.”

“What is it?” Piper said.

“No.”

“Harris,” Piper said, more sternly this time. “What are those the keys to?”

32

“No shit,” Pony said.

“I didn’t think you had it in you, Harris,” Piper said.

In front of them, gleaming in the overhead light of the garage, was a candy apple red Dodge Charger. More than a simple Charger, though; the car had clearly been heavily modified, from the glistening paint job to the shiny chrome air scoop jutting up from the center of the hood.

“Must have a supercharger under the hood,” Pony said, looking at the air scoop. “How many horsepower this thing got? Eight hundred?”

“I don’t know what you two are thinking,” Harris said, “but don’t. There is no way that…”

“Shut up,” Piper said.

“Whatareyou thinking?” Pony said, twirling the keys to the Charger around his finger.

“I think that beast is a hell of a lot faster than that piece of shit gray van we’ve been sitting in for the last couple of hours.”

“I have a lot of history with that piece of shit gray van.”

“Not to mention, the Charger’s right here, and the van is way out there.”

Pony nodded. “Yeah. There’s that.”

“I’m telling you, this isn’t going to work!” Harris said, his voice getting higher and more and more strained as he talked. “They’re just going to chase after us and…”

Pony tried to ignore him, saying to Piper, “If we’re going to do this, we need to do it now.”

Harris continued to unravel, his voice almost squeaking now with the panic twisting his voice.

“Listen to me. You two idiots are going to get us all killed. You don’t understand, they won’t just kill us. They’ll put tires full of gasoline around our necks and light them on fire and…”

Grunting with disgust, Pony grabbed Harris by the arm, dragging him forcefully over to the back of the Charger. Snarling at Harris the entire time, he hurled him up against the car.

“Stay right there,” he said. “And shut up.”

Harris watched as Pony opened up the trunk of the Charger with his keys.

“Oh, what?” Harris said. “So, if I don’t shut up, you’re going to put me in my own…”

Pony silenced him with a sharp punch across the jaw that knocked Harris out cold before he even fell. When he did fall, it was to slump forward and mostly into the open trunk of the Charger. With a heave, Pony shoved Harris’s legs all the way into the trunk and shut the lid.
