“Something on your mind, Pony?” Boomer asked.

“Nothing, just…” Pony said. “This idea of an undercover sneaking around.”

“It’s happened before. We handled it then, we’ll handle it now.”

“How?”

Boomer smiled. “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”

Pony stayed silent for a second. “I don’t really like moving forward without a plan. Or some idea of how we deal with this kind of situation. An undercover cop.”

“Well, we don’t kill them, if that’s what you’re thinking,” Boomer said.

“I didn’t know what to think.”

“Killing a cop is a terrible idea. Unless they’re a criminal wearing a badge, of course. That’s different. But killing a cop brings down a level of heat that is doom to any club. The cops, the feds, they’ll declare war on the entire MC, not just this charter. That’s a fight no club can win.”

Pony thought that over while Boomer went on.

“Plus, it goes against what we stand for. A cop going undercover here, is just a guy doing his job. He thinks he’s doing the right thing, protecting the community. He doesn’t understand what really goes on here. Can’t fault him for that. We do the exact same thing, look out for our community. At the same time…”

“We can’t roll over and let them take us apart,” Pony said.

“Exactly.”

“So what do we do?”

“What we always do. Outsmart them.”

“How?”

“Misdirection, mainly.”

“That’s it?” Pony said.

Boomer looked at him sideways. “What, you want we should light them on fire, or something?”

“I mean, they come in, lie to you, pretend to be your friend.”

“Well. I won’t lie, the first time you find out there’s a narc in your midst, all of your feelings get hurt. But, when you’ve been in the game as long as me, you get used to this sort of thing and stop taking it so personally.”

“I don’t know.”

“Life is usually more complicated than it first seems. Everyone’s got a good reason for doing what they’re doing, or at least, a reason. Undercover cops, as much as we might hate to think it, are just people doing their job. They think they’re doing the right thing. Fighting the good fight.”

“I guess it’s just hard to imagine, letting that kind of betrayal go unpunished.”

“If you keep focusing on all the ways in which you’ve been wronged in life, Pony, you’ll end up missing out on the best part of that life. Too busy chasing revenge.”

Pony thought about that, then snapped his fingers. “Oh, yeah. Now I remember why you run this club.”

“Very funny,” Boomer said with a laugh. “Now get out of here and find something useful to do.”

Piper was surprised as all hell when she came home to find Harris, her boss, sitting on the couch next to Carly. She’d have been less surprised if it had been Santa Claus sitting in her living room.

“Sir?” was all she could think of to say.
