“I am not smitten,” Piper said slowly, “and it’s really not as big of a deal as you make it out to be.”

“It’s everything, Piper. I know how important it is to you. Honesty. Integrity. When you first told me you were going to be going undercover, I was like, no way. Not my sister. She can’t lie worth shit. No poker face. Too honest.”

“I used to lie to Mom and Dad all the time,” Piper said with a snort. “Sneak out of the house…”

“Pfff,” Carly snorted back in response. “That’s Mom and Dad. That doesn’t count. I lied to them and snuck out of the house, too.”

Piper said, “What?”

“I’m not a schoolgirl, Piper.”

“You are literally that,” Piper said. “A girl who goes to school.”

“College isn’t… I’m not a… Whatever.”

“What you are, is a young woman completely out of her depth in a very bad situation,” Piper said. “And most of all, you’re my sister, Carly. I’d do anything for you.”

“And I’d do anything for you. Like tell you that we will find another way to handle my situation. One that doesn’t involve you lying to your new man biscuit.”

“His name is Pony, and that is a ridiculous thing to call him,” Piper said. “Man biscuit.”

“That’s a good one, right?” Carly said, bouncing up and down on the couch in her happiness. “I just made it up.”

“Congratulations.”

“I am serious, though. You need to tell your boss what’s up, make him hear it. And let him sort out his own bullshit on his end.”

Piper thought it over. As young as she was, as naïve as she was, Carly had a point. From a strict case management standpoint, the MC was a dead end, especially when it came to the cartel. It was dead obvious to Piper that they weren’t working together. She still couldn’t explain the physical evidence of the truck bomb and the plastic explosives, but there was simply no indication that the MC had any ties to the cartel. The undercover mission was a bust. It no longer made any sense and needed to end.

And, truth be told, it would be more than a little relief to stop having to lie to Pony. It had been fun, at first, to get out of the office and play Piper the Wild Child. She couldn’t deny that. Ride fast bikes, flirt with hot bad boys, what wasn’t fun about that? And since it was all just pretend, she could keep it at an arm’s length. No real consequences to her naughty girl antics.

But now that she’d actually gotten to know Pony, and realized the truth of who he was… and what her feelings were for him… it all seemed like a terrible, misguided idea. These were good people. He was a good man. And she was lying to them. Lying to him.

It would’ve been one thing if the MC had been working with the cartel, or doing something else horrible and unconscionable. That would have justified her doing what she had to do to keep innocent people safe and fix the situation.

But now, knowing what she knew… staying in place undercover was more than just a giant waste of time. It was a betrayal to who she really was.

And Harris… Harris would just have to lose his federal hard-on for the MC and realize that their time was better spent elsewhere if they were truly going to take the fight to the cartel.

“I guess you’re right,” she finally said.

“And one more thing,” Carly said.

“What?”

“We’re out of Velveeta.”

“Eww, God,” Piper said with a groan. “You still melt that over your Doritos?”

“So good,” Carly whispered. “So, so good.”

“Disgusting. You eat like a pregnant yak.”

“That is my greatest ambition in life,” she said, with the most sincere of nods.

“I love you, Carly.”

“I love you, too. Now go tell your dummy boss that you can’t keep lying to your boyfriend.”
