“Why not?”
Piper let out a sigh. “I just tried. You were listening in…”
“I wasn’t listening in.”
“…you were listening in, you heard how he reacted.”
“Yeah, like I said, he gave you the business.”
Piper ran her fingers through her hair and leaned back on the couch.
“Harris… he’s really, really fixated on this club,” she said. “He’s convinced that they’re the key to taking down the cartel.”
“But you found out that’s not true,” Carly said. “That it’s all a waste of time.”
“Yeah, but he might not be willing to hear that.”
“Why?”
Piper shrugged. “Maybe just because he’s sunk so much time into it, invested so much into it, that he doesn’t want to let it go.”
“That’s dumb.”
“Yeah, but it’s what people do.”
“Just explain it to him.”
“You haven’t had a boss, yet, Carly, not really,” Piper said. “And I need Harris to…”
“To what?” Carly said, when Piper abruptly cut off her own sentence.
Piper stayed quiet.
“Oh, shit, is this about me?” Carly said.
“No.”
“Yes it is, isn’t it?” Carly said. “He’s going to help you with my stupid case.”
“Carly…”
“That’swhy he knew all about me!”
“I don’t want you to…”
“No, I don’t wantyouto get yourself into a bad situation, just because of me!”
“Carly, these charges you’re facing are serious.”
“I know that.”
“No, you don’t,” Piper said. “You really don’t. I’ve seen what can happen to people who get hit with a felony charge. A lot of them never really recover from that. It fucks their whole lives up, puts them on a track they can’t ever get off of. I can’t see that happen to you.”
“And I can’t see you get hurt, just because of something fucked up that happened to me,” Carly said. “You gotshot, Piper. What if you hadn’t been wearing a vest? And taking all these risks, going undercover with a biker gang…”
“MC.”
“Whatever, MC,” Carly said with a dismissive wave. “And now I’m hearing that you have to compromise your morals and integrity by continuing to lie to this man you clearly are smittenwith, just to keep your boss happy because he might be able to help me. I can’t have that.”
