“Are you? You keep saying that. You promised me that you could tear down this motorcycle gang that has been plaguing me and standing in the way of my plans for this area.”

“I know.”

“And I would think that you would be happy to repay your debt to me in this fashion,” Navarro said. “After all, it is your duty to investigate and arrest criminals. All I’m asking you to do, is your fucking job.”

“I have been,” Harris said.

“Perhaps it was unclear, what I was after. The complete and utter destruction of this Razor’s Edge MC. Were you unsure as to our objective? Do you need a reminder?”

“No.”

“Or perhaps a reminder as to the extent of your debt to me,” Navarro said. “The considerable gambling debts, not to mention the issues with the women.”

“I don’t need a reminder,” Harris said.

Navarro seemed to not hear him. “I have to wonder what your superiors at the FBI would think of your dalliances with the prostitutes that we have provided to you over the years.”

“There’s no way for them to find out about that,” Harris said, but his voice was unsure.

“No?” Navarro said. “I think you might be surprised, how easy it is to place a camera in a hotel room. They make them so small now, those cameras. It’s really impressive. And still, you can tell exactly who is in the room… the woman, the man… and exactly what it is they are doing.”

Harris looked away again. Bad enough that he was tied to this puppet master, even worse that the same puppet master insisted on mocking him even as he made him dance on the end of his strings.

“As I said, I don’t judge,” Navarro continued. “Not even those with… unusual desires when it comes to women. But when one of those women ends up dead…”

“I never hurt anyone,” Harris said quickly.

“And yet, one of those poor women was found dead shortly after your… meeting with her,” Navarro said. “We, of course, took care of getting rid of the body for you, but…”

“You did that,” Harris said. “Probably one of these psychopaths you have glaring at me in my own living room. You killed that woman, and now you’re trying to pin it on me.”

“Now, now, now,” Navarro said, wagging his finger at Harris. “This is not the time for accusations. We’re friends, yes? Friends look after each other. Keep each other’s secrets. Look out for each other’s interests. So long as we stay friends, no one need ever find out about the… personal issues… that you have.”

“I’m doing everything I can about the MC,” Harris said. “These bikers you want gone. I’m doing my best.”

“Sadly, that does not seem to be enough,” Navarro said. “Luckily for you, I am here to guide you. And give you the assistance you clearly so desperately need.”

Harris swallowed hard. He didn’t like that sound of that at all.

“I don’t need any assistance,” he said, warily.

“No?” Navarro said. “So this MC that has been standing in my way time and time again is now gone? All the members dead or in prison? Has this come to pass since we last spoke?”

“No,” Harris said.

Navarro’s smile was cold, mirthless. “No.”

“It’s not that simple…” Harris began to protest.

“Steven, Steven, it is that simple,” Navarro said. “It is. It is, because I will it to be so. Do you understand? It is my will. Therefore, it is simple. My will shall become reality, and you will make it happen.”

“I want to, I’m trying to, but you don’t understand,” Harris said.

Harris’s heart skipped a beat as two of Navarro’s goons stepped forward slightly. Their faces were grim masks of violence waiting to happen. He’d clearly over-stepped with his last comment, and now, the two killers who had moved toward him had their hands on the pistols tucked into the front of their waistbands.

Navarro, on the other hand, seemed perfectly at ease, as if they were having a polite conversation in the middle of a coffeeshop. He didn’t so much as glance at the two killers standing behind him.

“Then please, make it clear to me,” he said.
