“Eh,” Devil said with a shrug. “Shit has a tendency of working itself out. Look at me. I constantly get into all kinds of shit that should’ve got me killed a long time ago. But here I am.”

Pony thought about that for a second. “Can’t say you’re entirely wrong about that last part.”

“Look, dude,” Devil said. “Life is simple. As long as you’ve got the brothers with you, what else do you need? Well, that, and as long as your dick still works.”

“I’d say you’ve been helpful, but I’d never lie to you,” Pony said.

“Thanks, dude,” Devil said. “Hey, wait.”

“Come on,” Pony said, before Devil could come up with a response. “Benny’s waiting on us.”

The two of them had barely made it through the door to Benny’s little room over the bar when the computer genius began to holler at them.

“No, no, no, no!” he shouted. “My space! My space! We agreed to have an agreement and this is my space! No strangers allowed.”

Devil said, “Dude. We aren’t strangers.”

“You aren’t,” Benny said. “You aren’t. But him.”

“Him?” Devil said, looking around in confusion until his eyes settled on Pony. “Benny… you know him.”

“No, I don’t. I do not.”

“That’s Pony.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Benny, you know me,” Pony said. “We’ve met at least a dozen times.”

Benny shook his head. “No.”

“Yes, you do,” Pony said. “I was there that night you met…”

Too late, Devil said, “Dude!”

Pony bit his lip. He’d been about to saythe night you met Eva. Eva, the bombshell adult actress who had, until recently, been having the most unlikely of affairs with Benny.

Until recently. Recently, Eva had taken off without warning on an impromptu tour through Europe, leaving Benny heartbroken and alone in his tiny room above the clubhouse.

“No,” Benny said, the word turning a wail as the little man began to pace back and forth with his hands over his ears. “No no no no no! No! Eva Eva Eva my Eva! No!”

“Dude,” Devil said, shaking his head at Pony. “You had to say it.”

“I didn’t!” Pony said, his words stumbling as he frantically tried to think of the right words to fix this. “I… I’m sorry, Benny, I didn’t mean to… I’m not good with this sort of thing.”

“No!” was all Benny had to say. “No, no!”

“Dude, you should take off,” Devil said, getting out his phone. “Me and Nikki will take care of this. You know when he gets like this, the only thing that brings him back is Nikki’s mom’s cooking.”

“Shit,” Pony said, genuinely upset with himself for setting Benny off.

“Don’t worry about it,” Devil said. “I got this.”

Judging by Benny’s furious pacing, Pony decided that a tactical retreat was the only viable option, and so he scooted out of the door as quickly as he could without saying another word. Behind him, he could hear the muffled wails and sobs of Benny mourning the loss of his girl-crush through the door.

He felt terrible about his mis-step, but it was so hard with Benny. There was no telling what would set the little guy off, and Pony was used to dealing with tough guys and hard men who let little or nothing get to them.
