“No,” she said back. “They stopped to help the one that crashed.”

“Good. Let’s get the hell out of here.”

“For a second there,” Piper said, “I thought we were in trouble.”

He looked straight ahead, mostly to hide the little grin he couldn’t help himself from having despite his earlier feelings.

Over his shoulder, he said, “You’re not the only one with fancy motorcycle moves.”

It had been only minutes since the car chase, and Piper’s nerves were still shot. She’d been enjoying those minutes, holding on tight to Pony, pretending it was just them out for a ride, dreading when the ride ended and she had to try to figure out what to say.

But it ended. Pony pulled over into a gas station parking lot, the Harley came to a stop, and Pony climbed up off of the bike. She followed suit, gun still in her hand. Would she need it? Stupid thought. If he wanted her dead, she’d be dead already. He would’ve just left her to die in the park.

The heavy silence was choking her, keeping any words from coming out, and she could barely look at the man she loved.

He was the one who finally broke the silence.

“Hi there,” he said. “I’m Pony. And you are?”

She let out a sigh. “It’s Piper, it’s always been Piper… God, Pony! There’s so much I have to tell you, so much… I don’t know where to start.”

She started to pace, unable to keep still under the heavy weight of everything that needed to be said. Pony had his hands on his hips, his face inscrutable.

“Are you dirty?” he said.

“What?”

“Are you a dirty cop? A dirty fed?”

She was genuinely surprised at that. “No!”

“What, that’s a strange question?” Pony said. “I see you meet with Harris, with a wad of something… heroin, it sounded like you said. Are you dealing that shit?”

“No,” Piper said, looking like she wanted to vomit. “Fuck no.”

“So?”

Her shoulders sagged. She had to say it to him sooner or later. “He wanted me to plant it.”

“In the clubhouse.”

“Yes.”

“So why didn’t you?”

“I… I couldn’t.”

“Why?” Pony said. “Because I caught you?”

“You didn’t catch me,” Piper said.

“Then what do you mean, you couldn’t?”

“I couldn’t…” she said, then let the rest of the words fall out. “I couldn’t do that to you.”

Pony seemed to take that in, staring at her, his face still an emotionless mask.
