A crunching sound pulled her out of her thoughts. Carly, gobbling down chips from a small bag.

“Are you serious?” she said.

“What? I found the vending machines and I’m freaking out. I eat when I’m stressed.”

“You eat when you’re breathing.”

“Whatever. How did they find us?”

“Cell phones,” Piper said.

“We got rid of ours,” Pony said.

“Yes, but Carly didn’t,” Piper said. “It’s my fault. I should’ve thought of that as soon as we met up here.”

“Don’t be so hard on yourself,” Carly said. “You got shot and betrayed by your boss and all the things.”

“Thanks.Cell phone.”

“It’s brand new… oh, fine,” Carly said, handing over her phone. “God, being a fugitive is so expensive.”

“Hold up,” Pony said, taking the cell phone from Piper before she could smash it. He jogged quickly out into the parking lot, where a pickup truck was driving slowly past on its way to the exit. With a quick move, he tossed Carly’s phone into the open bed.

“Um, why?” Carly said.

“Nice,” Piper said. “Rather than the signal going dead, they’ll see that it’s still active and follow a false lead.”

“Like I said, buy us some time,” Pony said.

“Neat. Buy us some time for what?” Carly said. “I mean, we can’t stay here, right?”

“She’s right,” Piper said. “We’re already drawing a lot of unwanted attention.”

As out of the way as the motel was, it clearly got more business than expected. At least a half-dozen people had wandered out of their rooms, poking heads out of open doors to see what all of the commotion was about.

With the three of them standing around an unconscious hitman with a ninja star sticking out of his face, it was only a matter of time before someone pulled out a camera and started filming.

“Where, though?” Carly said. “Another motel?”

After a moment, Pony said, “I have a place we can go.”

Piper wasn’t sure she liked the way his voice sounded. “Where?”

He turned to her, no longer avoiding her gaze like when they were talking. Now he looked at her almost the same way he used to.

“Do you trust me?” he asked.

Despite everything that had happened… or perhaps because of it… she did. She didn’t know if there was any way to mend what had been broken between them, but she did know this: when the two cartel hitmen had come crashing in, they once again had made a perfect team.

Like before, they fit seamlessly together, like they were born to be a pair. Piper knew it, and all she could do was hope that Pony felt the same way.

“I trust you,” she said.

“This is the biker clubhouse?” Carly said, as they stood in the parking lot.

“MC,” Piper and Pony said simultaneously.
