Chapter 5

It’s Sunday, the day before we all leave for Cancun and, somehow, I find myself shifting uncomfortably on the ostentatiously expensive, snow-white couch in my mother's meticulously decorated living room. The couch, as elegant as it appears, is far from comfortable. It's as if it was designed for interrogations rather than relaxation. Which must be exactly why my mother bought it. For moments like these.

"So Kathryn," she begins, her lips pursed in a way that sends a chill down my spine. "When exactly will this enigmatic man of yours be gracing us with his presence?"

I clear my throat, trying to appear nonchalant as I smooth my hands over my jeans. "Well, you see, the thing is..."

Before I can finish, the front door slams open, and Annabelle breezes in like a gust of fresh air. "Sorry I'm late! Traffic was an absolute nightmare." She drops her bag with a thud and plops onto the sofa beside me, shooting me a sly, knowing grin.

I shoot her a look as my mother's hawk-like attention shifts to her.

"That's quite alright, dear," my mother says, her voice dripping with sweetness. "Now, your sister was just about to enlighten me about her new beau, the one who will be accompanying her to your wedding."

Annabelle's eyebrows shoot up, and her eyes sparkle with faux surprise. "A new beau? Do tell!"

I glare at her, fully aware that she's enjoying my predicament. "Yes, well, he was supposed to meet me here, but it seems something came up."

My mother's frown deepens, her eyes narrowing. "Couldn't make it? But you were so adamant that he would be here."

I wave a hand dismissively, trying to defuse the situation. "I'm sure it's nothing to worry about."

Annabelle snorts, her eyes dancing with mischief. "Or maybe he got one glimpse of your terrifying dragon energy and went running for the hills."

"Annabelle!" My mother's voice sharpens, and I can't help but kick my sister's foot lightly in agreement.

"What? I'm just saying, she has a habit of scaring men away," Annabelle retorts, her grin widening.
