"Now that the trash took itself out, I've got a real fun surprise for you, darlin'." He waggles his eyebrows. "Whaddya say we ditch these wet blankets and go have ourselves a private adventure?"
Okay. So denial? Is that what we’re going with? Just pretending nothing at all strange and crazy happened last night? Cool. Cool. Cool.
Feigning nonchalance that I don’t feel, I roll my eyes dramatically at him. "A private adventure? With you? Not sure my insurance covers that kind of hazard, Cowboy."
Wilder clutches his chest, feigning offense. "You wound me! When have I ever led you astray?" At my pointed look, he laughs. "Alright, no need to answer that. But trust me, you'll love this surprise."
His eyes sparkle earnestly beneath the playful charm and despite my reservations, curiosity tugs at me. I do love surprises. And, an adventure away from wedding chaos sounds appealing.
I glance at the other two, wondering if they’re going to…I don’t know…object? Emrys stands rigid, an undercurrent of frustration in his flexing muscles as Wyatt's jaw ticks, clearly displeased at being brushed aside.
But neither say a damn thing.
"Alright then," I finally relent, turning back to Wilder. "But this better be good."
"Yes ma'am!" Wilder gives an exaggerated bow and offers his arm gallantly.
Maybe I need to listen to Annabelle’s advice and stop overthinking things so much and just embrace the unpredictability. What's the worst that could happen?
Actually no, I don't even want to imagine.
I take his arm anyway.
Chapter 25
After getting ready, I guide Kat away from the resort towards the surprise I've got planned, barely able to contain my excitement. This little excursion is sure to impress her. And thanks to that wager with Emrys and Wyatt, I’ve got extra motivation to make sure this date knocks Kat’s socks off.
Or silky unmentionables in this case.
I’m ‘gonna win this thing and prove I’m the only man who really knows how to charm Kat and get her heart racing. Those other two bozos don’t stand a chance.
"We're not going swimming with sharks or anything crazy, right Cowboy?" She asks, one delicate brow arched in that cute way she does when she’s trying to seem stern.
I chuckle, tucking her soft little hand snugly into the crook of my arm and reveling in her warmth pressed against me. "Much as I'd love to see you in a skimpy wetsuit, darlin', I've got something even better in mind."
Her cheeks pink up real pretty at that and she nudges me playfully. "If I didn't know better, I'd say you just enjoy keeping me in suspense."
Oh, she has no idea. I’ve been looking forward to this surprise date all morning, imagining the look on her gorgeous face when she sees where we’re going.
"Maybe I just like having your undivided attention," I tease back, delighting in the way it makes her breath hitch.
We reach the gleaming, rental jeep waiting nearby and I make a big show of opening the passenger door with an exaggerated bow. "Your chariot awaits, m'lady."
Kat laughs, the sound sweeter than wind chimes. Her eyes are just sparkling and vibrant. "Why thank you, good sir."
As we bump along the coastline, the wind whipping through our hair, she peers at me with those big curious eyes. Turquoise and endless like the sea before us.
"So are you going to tell me where we're headed or do I have to guess?" She asks.
I wink and tap my nose. "Patience, darlin'. We're almost there."
I ain’t about to ruin the big reveal.
We round a bend and the sound of Kat's awed gasp is sweeter than any music. The dense jungle opens up before us, an endless emerald canopy dotted with rocky cliffs and thundering waterfalls that crash into crystal pools below.
"Welcome to Coba's famed zip lining tours," I announce proudly as we roll up to the welcome center. "I know how much you love adventure."
The way Kat's face lights up makes my chest swell fit to burst. Like sunshine breaking through clouds, her brilliant smile reminds me that beneath that poised exterior lies a bold spirit just waiting to run wild. And I aim to unleash it today.
