Ash’s voice was muffled by his palms. “So am I. I just want her to be happy. I don’t give a damn what happens to me.”

Piers grunted. Their fate was already decided—she just didn’t know it yet. What she chose to do, stay or go, be with them or not, he and Ash were finished.

They’d handed in their resignations and were no longer Boot Knockers.

The weight of the change still hadn’t totally sunk in yet. He couldn’t say he harbored any regrets, though.

The mere thought of entertaining another lady on the ranch, let alone taking her to bed when they’d given their hearts to Sylvee, disgusted him far too much. He loved her and Ash. He didn’t need anybody else.

He was just wondering how long his rainy-day fund would carry him for, when the bungalow door cracked open.

He and Ash shot out of their seats at the same time. Chest heaving, Piers faced the woman who entered.

Sylvee’s cheeks were flushed from the fresh air. When his gaze locked with hers, he expected to find the trace of tears or a glitter of stress. Instead, she looked back at him with a placid calm, the opposite of what he’d feared.

Ash took a step toward her. She held up a palm, stopping him.

Piers’s chest blazed with panic. A deep ache that could only be grief of losing her flooded in.

Quietly, Sylvee closed the door and approached them in measured steps. Neither one of them moved.

Piers’s fists curled at his sides.

“You were gone a while,” Ash grated out.

She nodded. “I had some things to take care of. First, you should know that I spoke to Hugh and Riggs on Avril’s behalf.”

Piers’s gut burned. They also had talked to their bosses and told them they were through with the ranch—moving on. Did they tell Sylvee what they’d done?

“How did the bosses react about Avril?” Piers tried to control his heart rate but was failing.

Sylvee dipped her head. When she lifted it, she wore a wide grin.

His heart pounded. To hell with the beauty of the wilderness. Nothing could match Sylvee.

“Her position on the ranch is safe. They won’t terminate her. Unless she takes action to find out who fathered her child and seeks their intervention, the matter is dropped.”

“Yes!” Ash stepped forward and grabbed Sylvee around the hips. He lifted her and planted a kiss smack on her sultry lips.

She laughed, kissing him back. Then he slowly lowered her to her feet.

“We have news too,” Piers began.

“I’m not finished. Can I go first?” She looked between them.

“Of course, love. Go on.” Piers couldn’t resist clasping her fingers.

“I spoke with Charlie.”

He felt paralyzed. Even the cogs of his mind jammed to a halt.

“We’re listening,” Ash prompted quietly.

“I quit the law firm,” she blurted.

Piers stared at her.

“We quit the ranch.” Ash’s revelation made her rock on her heels in surprise.
