“Cool. So will I.” He bobs his head and clears his throat, almost like he’s unsure of what to do or say.

We’re quiet as we stand there.

“Um, okay, I’ll text Maya then,” I say, quickly typing a response to Maya.

“Uh, yeah, I will too,” Tyler says.

We’re quiet as we type out responses in the text chat. I glance up and see a frown resting between Tyler’s eyebrows as he looks down at the time on his phone.

“I should get going,” he says. “Early day tomorrow.”

Disappointment crashes through me. I guess I won’t be getting that soul-shattering kiss after all.

The last bit of my nerves shouts at me to grab Tyler before he walks out my door and plant a kiss on him…

I take in the hurried way he packs up the bag he brought with him. The moment’s gone. I should just let it go.

I force myself to smile at him. “Same. I should start winding down too.”

He grabs his jacket. “So, uh, have a good night.”

“You too.”

I follow him to my front door, he gives me a quick hug good-bye, and I close the door behind him.

And then I lean my back against the door and slide down slowly, groaning softly the whole way down, until my butt hits the floor.

I’ve just missed out on one hell of a kiss with Tyler Grant.

Chapter 11

Tyler

Isip my drink and glance over at Tori sitting next to me in the stands of the arena. It’s near the end of the first period of the Bashers game against Seattle.

I look ahead and try to pay attention to the action on the ice, but my attention is shot. Normally when I attend a Bashers game, I’m one hundred percent into it. Not tonight though.

Because I can’t stop thinking about last night and how Tori and I almost kissed.

I think back to how I was two seconds away from kissing her before we were interrupted by that slew of group texts.

I think of that dazed look in her eyes as I pulled her closer to me. I breathe and the memory of her sweet vanilla scent hits.

But it’s that plump, pink mouth of hers that I can’t get out of my head. How I was aching to kiss her, taste her…

I’ve already kissed her, but that was a quick, lips-only kiss. The kiss that we almost had last night wasn’t going to be lips-only.

My mouth was watering in anticipation of parting those pillowy pink lips with my tongue, and then teasing her tongue with mine…

Maya taps my arm, pulling me back to the present. “Hey. Do you want to finish my beer? I can’t drink it all.”

“Oh. Uh, sure. Thanks.” I take her cup and have a sip.

I really shouldn’t be obsessing about almost kissing Tori. She’s clearly not thinking about it. She’s been totally normal today, acting like we didn’t almost kiss last night.

It’s obvious she’s forgotten about it. I need to too. And I need to stop replaying it over and over in my head, like some weirdo.

“You okay?” Maya looks at me. “You’ve been kind of quiet tonight. I normally have to tell to you tone it down so you don’t get us thrown out,” she jokes.
