She turns to Becca and Tori and starts talking about wedding stuff. Becca asks if they’ve set a date yet, and Maya shakes her head.

“Not sure, but it won’t be a long engagement.”

Theo grabs her hand and kisses it. “I don’t want to wait. I want to marry my dream girl.”

Both Becca and Tori say “aww” at the same time.

Maya turns to look at them. “Will you two be my bridesmaids?”

Both Becca and Tori have the exact same reaction: they rest their hands on their chest and gasp at the exact moment. They both look like they’re about to cry.

“Yes!” they both say before pulling Maya into a group hug.

I start to laugh right as I turn to Theo. “A little over the top, huh?” I joke.

He clears his throat and shoves his hands in his pockets. “Actually, uh, I wanted to ask you…do you wanna be a groomsman? I’m going to ask a few of my teammates too, of course, but you’re Maya’s brother and I want you to be part of our big day.”

I go quiet and stare at him for a solid three seconds. And then I feel like a dumbass for joking about Tori and Becca’s reactions because okay yeah, it feels pretty damn thrilling and special to know that Theo wants me to stand with him on his wedding day.

He lets out another “oof” sound when I pull him in for hug number two.

“Of course, man. I’d be honored.”

“You think Gage would want to be a groomsman too?” Theo asks, his voice strained, probably because I’m hugging him so tightly.

I let him go. “Yeah, of course. He’d be thrilled.”

Theo smiles, looking the slightest bit relieved, like he was nervous to ask us.

I pull Theo aside as I glance over at Maya, Tori, and Becca, who are still excitedly talking to each other.

“But I’d hold off on asking for a bit,” I say, careful to keep my voice low. “He’s going to propose to Becca tomorrow night and he’s pretty focused on that.”

Theo’s eyes go wide. “Oh…”

He does a quick glance over his shoulder at Becca. “I’ll wait then.”

Just then my phone buzzes with a text from my mom. When I skim it, I roll my eyes.

Anak, I want to set you up with someone for your sister’s wedding, okay? She’s a very nice girl, very pretty and sweet, and works at the same hospital as your cousin. And she goes to Mass every Sunday.

“Everything okay?” Theo asks.

“Yeah, just my mom trying to set me up with a date for your guys’ wedding. Kill me.”

Theo winces. “Getting set up by your parents is always awkward as fuck.”

“Yup.”

My phone rings. I let out a heavy sigh when I see it’s my mom calling.

“Hi, Mom.”

“Did you get my text?”

“Yes, I got it,” I say, trying to dial back the annoyance in my voice.

I love my mom to death, but she’s been trying to marry me off to the nearest available woman for the past ten years of my life. It doesn’t matter how many times I tell her no, thanks, or that I’m not interested in being set up by her. She texts or calls me every couple of months and mentions that she’s met a lovely girl that she thinks would be my perfect match.
