Satan.

Asher pushed off the bench, trying to hide a shudder, but only partially pulling it off.

After what that motherfucker had put him through, it was amazing he wasn’t displaying more of a horrified reaction. That was Asher, though, resilient beyond all fucking measure.

“Hand it over,” he spoke in a rough voice.

Kill hesitated. “If you pick up, can’t he track us here?”

“No.”

He frowned. “How is—”

“There are security protocols in place,” Aurora told him. As Killian took her word and nodded, he held onto the phone, looking out at us all, before telling Asher, “Let me handle him.”

Well, that was a surprise.

He never wanted to face that fucker, Samuel, alone. For good reason, he was terrified of him. The asshole had gotten in his head so deeply that Kill hadn’t believed he’d ever been good enough to go toe-to-toe with him.

Damn, he’d come a hell of a long way to pull this off then, to get to this point.

He sucked in a breath as the ringing continued, like a haunting, ominous melody echoing off the walls surrounding us.

And then he swiped it open, taking the call, and then putting it on speakerphone mode.

Before he could even get a word out, such as what we’d all been expecting to be a sarcastic greeting laced with derision, a frantic voice erupted.

Not Samuel Carmichael’s.

“Killian, darling, it’s me. Mom. I need you to listen to me carefully and act quickly. I understand you might not trust me right now after the extreme actions I had to take the night of the gala, but that was for your own good, to protect my son. I couldn’t see any other way at the time. And now, because you didn’t allow me to take you away from it all, you’re in serious danger once again.”

I blinked at her barrage of panic filling the room and slamming into all of us.

“Mom, what’s going on?” Killian responded. “Are you all right and—”

“I’m fine. This isn’t about me and I don’t want you worried about that. You need to focus on you only. They’re coming. They’re coming for you right now. I just got word a few moments ago.”

“What? I don’t… how do you have shithead’s phone?”

“The important thing is that I do. It was how I was able to determine what was going on, what they’re doing tonight. Coming for you, son.”

Brow furrowed and eyes hard as his brain was clearly working a million miles a minute, Asher took the phone and spoke, “You’re telling us Samuel is coming for us, Valerie?”

“Asher?”

“The man you were fine with having killed, yes.”

“I’m sorry, that wasn’t what I wanted. It was her will, though, and I couldn’t stop it once it was in motion, I could only protect my boy, so that’s what I tried to do. He’d proven much more skilled and determined that his father had led me to believe, though.”

“Sam doesn’t know Killian, he never did. You said her will, you’re confirming that you’re in league with Isobel Carlyle? Nyx?”

“God, you know?”

“We’re well aware.”

“You’re in contact with Lan?”

“Correct.”
