With the other, they pulled away their mask.

Adrenaline surged to a whole other level as I took in those familiar purple eyes, that long black hair.

“Hello, daughter of mine.”

“Mom,” I choked.

She pushed harshly against my bound hands. “You’re interfering where you don’t belong.”

“You can’t do this, you can’t take the Infidels’ place. They need to fall. All of this needs to end.”

“It will fall. For me to rise.”

“No.”

“You have no idea what I’ve endured to get to where I am. I’m not stopping now. Not for anything or anyone.”

“I’m your daughter.”

She sneered. “You were nothing but a business transaction to me. A way to appease and distract Lance. And if it makes you feel any better, it worked wonders. I was able to do what I needed, building my empire, while he remained focused solely on you. The fool gave up his power for you, for family and ridiculous sentiment.”

“You’re even worse than I remember.”

“You’re being ungrateful. I could’ve killed you several times over, but I allowed you to live.”

“Allowed me to live? Don’t you see how insane that sounds? Dad was right—you really are a true megalomaniac.”

“I’m ambitious and I was tired of being kept beneath the boots of men like Carson and your father. You’re making the same mistake with Asher and his band of brothers.”

“You don’t know anything. You don’t know them.”

She ignored that and told me, “Leave here now and you’ll be spared. If you continue to come at me, though, you’ll fall with all the rest and I’ll have you buried with the likes of Carson and Samuel, and your boyfriends.”

“There’s no motherly side to you at all, is there?”

“No,” she said, simply. “This is an agreement that Lance and I had. I wasn’t to touch you and then he wouldn’t get in my way. He’s really pushing it tonight though, so he’ll be punished. If he takes said punishment, our agreement will still stand. If not, you’re on the chopping block, my dear girl.”

I looked out to see Killian staggering over, pulling his gun as he went.

Jonah was trying to rush through his opponents to back him up too.

Isobel snapped her fingers behind her and then suddenly Killian was tackled to the ground, and then several more masks formed a barrier behind her, protecting her, their leader.

My earpiece buzzed in my ear and my dad’s voice came through.

“Stay very still. Three seconds, angel.”

I sucked in a breath to calm myself and to resist the overwhelming urge to fight back and lay into this monster before me.

Three.

Two.

One.

I saw my dad appearing from the north side of the house steeped in shadow a split-second before shots rang out, one each driving into the skulls of the four masks forming a wall between Isobel and the rest of the raging battle. They dropped and Isobel released me abruptly and spun around.

A bullet fired into two masks who were now pinning Killian down. Blood splattered all over him as their skulls were blown away, and he rolled out from under them, wiping it off with his sleeves. My dad fired at Jonah’s opponents too, clearing the rest of the battlefield.
