More closed in.

A shot rang out, startling me, because I’d already determined they weren’t packing shit.

The guy on me gurgled, blood sprayed all over the side of my face and neck, and I turned to see him slapping a hand to a heavily-bleeding wound in his throat. A fatal wound.

He lost his grip on me and collapsed onto the ground, dying right there.

The guy I was choking took another bullet straight through the chest.

As I released him and he slumped to his knees, the shots became rapid-fire.

All swift and efficient.

All kill shots.

The shooter wasn’t messing around.

In moments, I was standing in the middle of a circle of blood and death, all ten of them dropped, dead to the world.

The clack of heavy footsteps had my heart jumping into my throat.

The surefootedness, almost arrogance, I could feel it in the sound alone. Then those perfect shots, the no-nonsense, brutal and completely mercilessly way the shooter had just dropped ten bodies all in the name of saving me…. him.

Asher.

He was all right.

And he’d come to find me.

But as a shadow rounded the corner, then stepped under the faint illumination of a streetlight, my heart sank.

Not him.

Definitely not him.

Black tactical gear filled my vision, the guy’s identity hidden by a balaclava.

And it wasn’t those gorgeous silver eyes swirling back at me as they connected with mine.

It was those mocha eyes I’d memorized after Asher had told me about the connection they’d had a few years back.

Caleb fucking Rowland.

The guy who’d tried to take my place.

Who’d tried to take him from me.

“Had that handled. Aren’t you supposed to be finishing off the dollhouse network, handling shit down on the sub-level?” I said as I strode over to him, shrugging my now rumpled jacket back on.

“It’s done. Mission accomplished.”

I frowned. “Then why are you still here?”

“Asher’s been compromised.”

A chill rolled down my spine. “What? No. What the shit are you talking about?”

“Carson got to him. He used Aurora to get under his skin. I helped them both get out, but I can’t locate him anywhere now. He’s not where he’s supposed to be.”
